View Full Version : Hotchkis or DSE rear leaf springs
jhilts Dec 4th, 05, 04:59 PM I bought some Eaton Leaf Springs for my 68 from Ricks and my car sits about 3 to 4 inches to high. I plan to order some lowering rear leaf springs and I am not sure if I should order the 1 and 1/2" drop Hotchkis or the 2" or 3" drop leaf springs from Detroit Speed and Engineering. I need about a 3" drop from the current setup, but I don't know if it is higher than the standard height because of the new Eaton springs.
Here is a photo album and you can see the current setup on the very last picture.

Mike68RS Dec 5th, 05, 05:31 AM Until you get the full weight of the car on the car, I'd wait a while on the springs. I have Hotchkis leafs and I'd like to have the rear a little lower. The DSE springs lower the car more. Look how my 68 sits with the Hotchkis leafs and I have almost a full tank of gas.

jhilts Dec 5th, 05, 06:28 AM Thanks, I do like your car.
My car measured 17 and 3/4" from the center of the axle to the fender lip. We were thinking the 1 and 1/2" drop would not be enough. I will probably go with the 3" drop.
Did you drop the front?
What size wheels are you running?
rojo Dec 5th, 05, 07:56 AM I recall 14.5 to 14.75 being the final measurement on some '67's (not mine) with the Hotchkis. Might do some searches. I agree with Mike, I wouldn't make any decisions until it's all back together.
Mike68RS Dec 5th, 05, 07:57 AM The front is also dropped with Global west springs. I am running BF Goodrich KDW tires. Fronts are 225/55/16 and rears are 245/50/16.

jhilts Dec 5th, 05, 10:10 AM Yeah the subframe and engine will go in this weekend (hopefully). I won't order until then.
The problem is that I don't really know what the stock ride height was for the back. If I knew that I could make a better judgment. I just can't tell if the new Eaton springs are higher than factory.
Mike68RS Dec 5th, 05, 03:46 PM I just measured my rear height. It is 15" from the center of the wheel to the wheelwell lip, this is with a full tank of gas and Hotchkis leafs.

400bird Dec 5th, 05, 05:31 PM mine 67 is 16" in the rear, well that was about 2 months ago and they may have settled a little since then
scblucam Dec 5th, 05, 08:31 PM in the picture I see shackles. get rid of the shackles and use standard rear spring brackets
jhilts Dec 6th, 05, 04:49 AM I ordered the shackles from Rick's, I thought they were standard. When I first got the car and it was black they had incorrect shackles. Please let me know if I am missing something.
scblucam Dec 6th, 05, 06:00 PM If you can see the lower spring eye without bending over and looking under the car they are too long. The shackle you have are made to raise the car in a primative way. Just from the first picture the spring eye looks to be 3" or 4" inches below the valance. either use the highest hole or get the proper stock shackels that have only two holes, no adjustment. The stock shackles have only about 4" between the holes verses what looks like about 8" on yours.
jhilts Dec 7th, 05, 04:50 AM The first picture is when I brought it home and it did have the incorrect shackels.
Currently the car is in primer, check out the last picture and let me know what you think. There still is quite a large gap with new Eaton springs and the correct shackles.
I think I might be going with the 3" drop. I am going to get the front clip in first before I make a decision.
scblucam Dec 7th, 05, 06:55 PM Looks better, cant see the shackles, but there is no weight on the car at that point. Don't tighten the spring bolts until weight is on the car. It will settle some. 4" I don't know. Also what is the tire height, some low aspect ratios just make the suspension look high.
jhilts Dec 8th, 05, 08:21 AM The overall tire diameter is 26.1, it may look different once I get the front clip on.
However, I am only excepting it to drop 1/2 with gas and the rear seat. I may be wrong though.
