what kind of headers did you use I have 427 im putting in my 68, and wanted to know if its best to use full length or short tube headers, as far as what fits and horsepower thanks.

I just went through this with my 68 and chose lone tube headers. I like them. I like the way they look and, so I have been told, you do get better performance with the long tube header. Now that I have said that, the first time I scraped my new headers I thought, "if I drop this thing two inches I will really have to watch were I drive, or get shorty headers." Do you have plans to drop the front end of the car? If you do I would go with the shorty header... or get the long tube and watch where you are going!! The long tubes do look nice so I am happy.

Stay away from shorty headers, they are pretty pricey and for not much more, you can get a quality full length header. You would probably pick up an extra 15-30hp with full length headers over shorties depending upon how your 427 is built.

I had the same problem. When I was building my 69 w/bb, I had hooker comps to start with. With the car sitting the way I wanted, I had about 3" ground clearance. I put on Patriot mid lenths, problem solved. My 2 1/2" pipes are even with the subframe. I don't know how much h/p difference there is among the two, but if you don't need that last ounce of power, I think the pleasure of knowing that I'm not going to drag my headers on every bump in the road far outweighs a few h/p. (I don't do any racing) Now if your car sits close to the stock ride height you should be ok with full lenths.

I believe it was Car Craft that did a header comparison a while back. They started with the shorties, and then went on to diff. primary sized full length headers. What they found was that the shorties produced the most torque, and HP, up to around 5,500 where the long tube headers began to show an improvement from there on up.

Think about this for a moment-how often do you drive at 5,500RPM? Obviously you spend more time in the lower RPM's and the shorties have proven to be dominant over long tube headers for 90% of the driving that most street cars do.

I don't know if this carries over to BB's or not, but it was an easy choice for me to go to shorties after scraping my long-tubes until there were holes in them. By the way, I am lowered 2" in the front, and 1" in the rear.
