are the rims on the car already?
I ask because a "nuetral backspacing" sounds like it would be 4"
it would be hard to say what the widest you could fit would because most of us here with 8" wide rims run 4 1/2" to 5" of BS
or atleast thats what i have gathered,
my 16s are 4 3/4", and have 255/50R16
oh and another problem with 16s is that there are not enough tire sizes out there, 255 is the widest i have found
if you want 275, they will need to be 30" tall, that would be quite the sweet rake (and it could help the front not be taller than the rear)

i am running 245 50 out back and 225 50 up front right
the same exact size I have right now, and yes i tried the rears in the front, and mine rub too
i really think you should measure your back spacing, and do you have 8" all the way around with the same BS?
and what i was saying about good luck finding tires, no one makes 275 (other than some slicks) take a look
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compare1.jsp?width=275%2F&ratio=45&diameter=16&startIndex=0&search=true&pagelen=20&pagenum=1&pagemark=1&x=100&y=8&RunFlat=All
try tire rack and see what you can find (www.tirerack.com)
if you find some 275 (street tires) for 16" rims please let me know
