View Full Version : 67 Breaks (Not stock, but GM)
New67RS Dec 6th, 05, 08:58 AM Help-
I have a 67RS. It has front disk breaks. These are not stock, they are single piston. I would like to use them (short on cash). They need help though. I thought that I read somewhere that the single piston break stuff from 70-74 would fit.??
Any info would help. I'm sure that this car was originally drum.
-Thanks-
RS3SDL2MG Dec 6th, 05, 05:26 PM 1968 thru 1974 nova break's or (BRAKES) as they are sometimes called will work perfectly , but you better hurry cause with the release of the new camaro bodies they won't be a 1968 to 1974 nova on wheel's to be found !
New67RS Dec 6th, 05, 07:56 PM Thanks, and good point. Those new bodies will put a damper and our legit restoration. My brakes do break. ;) (I'm all for a complete aftermarket buildup, as long as it doesn't interfere with mine. ;)
Eric Kammerer Dec 6th, 05, 08:19 PM If these brakes are on the car already, what exactly do you need to make them work?
For example, if you just need calipers, you should just be able to go into an autoparts store and get reman calipers for a 69 Camaro (first year for single piston). It would be the same part number for the X body (Nova, etc) cars, probably for the A-bodies (Chevelle etc) as well. It's a real common part used over a lot of years. The reman calipers are cheap, and I've had good luck with them.
Same for rotors and bearings. Just get 69 Camaro parts.
If you have a question as to exactly what setup you have, you'll have to get numbers off the calipers, and or post pictures of your setup.
It's really common to use 69 F-body or the 68-74 X-body parts on 67 and 68 F-bodies. I used a 69 setup on my 68, because it was simpler.
Do you have specific parts you need, and are just looking for a vehicle to tell the parts counter guy to look up??
New67RS Dec 7th, 05, 07:11 AM It looks like these brakes were slapped on. I was just going to replace all of the parts with new, over the counter stuff. I'll get some numbers off the calipers and see what I can dig up.
New67RS Dec 7th, 05, 09:53 AM Just tring to figure out the picture post thing.
Eric Kammerer Dec 7th, 05, 11:44 AM You need to have photos hosted somewhere like photobucket, and then paste in the link.
Or, just email them to one of us and we can post or just tell you what you need to know.

Thanks, BIG HELP!!:)
Eric Kammerer Dec 8th, 05, 07:43 AM Well, those aren't 69 F-body or X-body brakes. The calipers on ours mount on the trailing side (toward the back of the car), maybe those are A-body or 2nd gen F body.
If you want to try to use anything you have there, we'll need casting numbers off everything; calipers, spindles, steering arms. It may be as simple as switching the caliper brackets left to right and getting some new dust shields and rotors
Also need to see where your brake hardlines and the hoses meet. That setup does look pretty thrown together.
Eric Kammerer Dec 8th, 05, 08:01 AM Here's what a clean 69 F body setup looks like. The caliper is on the rear half of the rotor. I don't have the lines on in this photo, but the hard lines come up just behind the rear of the upper control arm, and meet the rubber line at a bracket on top of the frame rail. The hose connects to the caliper in the center of the back side of the area the piston is in, not on the bottom on an angle like the caliper in the above photo.

Some of the popular drum to disk conversion kits use the drum hard lines and rubber hoses; the drum hard lines come over the frame rail further toward the firewall and meet the hoses in a bracket on the outside of the frame.
New67RS Dec 8th, 05, 02:27 PM Ok Guys, here is what I found.
The caliper on the Right (Passenger) side has these #'s 6473 and under that 497. (It has a BIG "L" on it, Weird?)
The rotor #'s are 344-85.
I can't find any #'s on the steering arm/spindle. I'm still looking. Take a look at this picture and see if you recognize it. I hope I don't have to buy new spindles.

New67RS Dec 8th, 05, 05:00 PM Ok, With a little research it looks like these are/maybe Nova disk brake parts. They were just installed on the wrong sides? I'm in the process of checking to see if the backing plates and caliper mounts can be switched from side to side. I think they can, because they only list one spindle for left and right. If this is correct; what bake caliper, pads and rotors do I get? 69 Camaro or 70 Nova? Or are they the same?
67 Plum Dec 8th, 05, 05:05 PM The pads are the same.MD54 I think.

Ok now I have a question. Did you try switching the backing plates around and did you run into the interference problem with the steering arm and the caliper bolt? Heres a picture.

davidpozzi Mar 14th, 06, 09:33 PM Align it with the specs on my web page.
What springs did you put on the car?
If you have the brake hose anchor points on the side of the subframe, try 71 Monte-Carlo hoses.
69''s which came with single piston brakes used a very long hose clipped to the upper A arm and it anchors to the top of the frame rail. 67/68 Camaros that came with drums don't have this setup, it's on the side of the frame rail.
New67RS Mar 15th, 06, 09:52 AM Thanks again Dave.
I already printed your page with the alignment specs.
Yesterday I put the hoses on and was thinking these were a bit on the long side.
I'll order the Monte ones tomorrow.
Thanks-
