I just completed this project on an 88.

What a tedious job. I followed the chilton guide.

Remove plastic covers under dash (cover wiring etc.). Remove dash pad. remove speakers. remove right speaker bracket, remove electronic control module (disconnect 2 connectors). remove radio trim plate, remove glove box (between seats) bolts, slide center console back a bit. Remove trim piece under steering wheel, remove 2 large nuts that hold steering wheel shaft and let shaft and steering wheel drop down a bit, remove all bolts/screws that hold dash to car along the windshield. remove 2 bolts under dash that hold dash underside in place. slide right hand side of dash back to get a bit of access to the heater box, open heater box (remove about 5 screws). remove heater core (2 screws) (don't forget to unhook heater hoses first (ouch)). Took me about 4 to 5 hours, but I was patient and methodical about it.
