View Full Version : Speedo reduction box??
poolballz Dec 16th, 05, 12:37 PM I have a 1973 camaro with a 350 engine, 350 auto tranny, and 4:10 rears. I have a reduction box on the end of my cable that screws into my tranny. The thing does'nt work, because supposedly when i went to get it calibrated, they told me that there was a drive key(pin)missing that runs it. So unfortunately i could'nt get it done. I just wondered where the heck i get another one of these boxes that i can use. I need my speedo to at least work before calibration. I know NOTHING about these and i need help! My cable is'nt long enough to hook right into my tranny, so without replacing the cable, i would like the easy fix and get one of these boxes. If anyone can point me in the right direction, i would greatly appreciate it!!!! Thanks anyone!!!

You can get the adapter from the dealer or www.gmpartsdirect.com (http://www.gmpartsdirect.com) p/n 3932220 and the input shaft comes with it. One end is square to fit the driven gear in the tailshaft, but the other end has a 'pinched key' to fit in the box, I don't think one would be able to buy the input shaft singularly.
poolballz Dec 17th, 05, 06:19 AM Thanks Everett! Does this give me the whole box and all i need to do is screw it into my cable on one end and my tranny on the other? Will this replace my box i have now? Thanks again for the help! All other responces would be appreciated too. I would like to get my speedo fixed...lol Also, does this drive my tach too. Thanks!
Unreal Dec 17th, 05, 08:27 AM I purchased the shaft from my local GM dealer a few years ago. This fit my 69 adapter, but I'll bet it was still the same in 73.
Everett#2390 Dec 17th, 05, 02:48 PM Thanks Everett! Does this give me the whole box? Also, does this drive my tach too. Thanks!Your welcome! Yes, the whole box. No, it will not be tach drive.
poolballz Dec 17th, 05, 05:59 PM My tach does'nt work either, is there an easy fix for this, or what do i have to do for that to work? Sorry for questions, i'm not mechanically inclined when comes to cars...lol Thanks!
Everett#2390 Dec 18th, 05, 10:10 AM If the tach is original equipment, there may be a wire to connect to the negative post of the ignition coil or it was not hooked up.
Wire count on the ignition could be as follows: Positive post would have a supply, red in color, a yellow(?) wire from the starter solenoid and maybe, a lead from the little capacitor on the side for RF suppression for the radio. In 1974, GM brought out HEI and there is a TACH terminal, BUT, since you have 73, it won't be there because 73 had points ignition, unless previous owner(s) changed over. Then the additional tach filter would needed for the tach function.
If an aftermarket tach, usually the green wire gets connected to the negative coil post.
Make sure the tach is getting voltage, either OE or aftermarket, needs a switched supply and a good ground. OE tach, alot of this would be taken cre of in the OE wiring.
It could just be the tach itself is bad or fuse is blown in either case.
