Hey, folks. I need some help identifying this transmission a friend gave to me. He said it was an M-22, but at this point, I'm just not sure anymore.

The case is 388510, which doesn't narrow it down very much. The tailshaft is 3978764. In an oddball move, the date code is P01011 -- very strange, since I thought date codes weren't supposed to look like this. In another oddball move, the input shaft has 10 splines, and the output shaft has 32.

I just can't tell the angle of the gears, here's a picture:

Very high res here: http://gallery.theficus.com/gallery2/d/23007-2/DSC02434.JPG

Someone help, before I go insane!

I have more pictures if anybody needs to see more.

Definitely not an M22, here are some photos of an M21 and an M22.

M21, notice how the gears are almost vertical.

M22, notice how the gears are almost horizontal.

Input Shaft 1963-1965 Muncies
no grooves M20
1 groove M21

Input shaft 1966-1974 Muncies

no grooves M22
1 groove M21
2 grooves M20

There is also a letter designation on muncie cases made from the 1969-1974 model years.

A M20
B M21
C M22

It definately looks like you have an M20 or M21.

Your transmission is an M21. I checked your high resolution picture and the countergear has 1 groove between 3rd and 4th. It is also a hybrid of mixed parts. The 32 spline output should be combined with the 26 spline MDG.

Cool, thanks for the information. I'm kind of disappointed that it's not an M-22, but at the same time I'm not.

I'm disappointed because M-22s are worth a lot more than M-21s, and I'm planning to sell this on eBay. However, I'm also not disappointed. I wanted to put this in my car which is currently equipped with an M-21. I haven't had the time or opportunity to swap it out, and now it's good to know that it's not worth it anyway. :)

Thanks for the help. Anybody want to buy a Frankenstein M-21? :)
