i am into a rotessiere restoration and would like info on firewall and chassis, and suspension markings in general. The only marks that I found during the disassembly was the partial vin in yellow crayon on the dr. upper inner fender well that you would not normaly see (inside of the wheel area on the upper between the wheel well and the inside fender. The car is a 350 350 turbo 12 bolt built May 5th of 69. no air car. Norwood built. Thanks for any photos shown.

Might want to see this thread, and do a search of the forums:

Man have I seen some cars really marked up. I am not sure how much is appropriate, but too much to me really looks bad. Guys like ChevyThunder, and others with survivors have these wonderful time capsules, and can serve as accurate modles to go by IMO.

Good luck!

Rob

I agree with Olympic69 that too much can look bad.

I'm a believer in putting back what you actually find on the car, rather than what has been found on other cars or what was "supposed" to be there. I havent seen two cars with all the same markings, and if I recreated all that I have found onto one car, it would look pretty silly (to me, at least).

Welcome to Team Camaro, Any chance you got some digital pics of the crayon partial vin writing? Ive not heard about that type of marks yet, as most have the stamped partial VIN below heater motor and under cowl vent..

These are separate topics being discussed as one. Confusing.

Inspection stamps and marks: All cars had them. Typically found on suspension components fastened to a specific torque setting. Steering arms & knuckles, tie rod ends, rear axle, etc.; usually a stripe or daub of paint. The assembled frame received a stripe, applied while upside down. Camaros built at Norwood had "P T B" stamps applied at the top sides of the firewall by Fisher body to indicate paint, trim and body had passed inspection.

Assembly marks aka "grafitti": Grease pencil marks applied to the body shell while being processed to aid workers. Most were applied prior to paint, some were after. Norwood cars have some under the rear seat backrest "grn, X1, X3" are typical of what has been seen. The unit number is always somewhere on the front sheetmetal. Our '67 Z/28 had "758" on the inside of the lower grille panel on the white paint. The writing on the firewall was there to indicate a number of features, color and cowl piercing among them. For example "C60" would indicate a/c. Almost all of this was applied to the unpainted body and was painted over during firewall blackout. It left stains in the metal, visible when the paint is removed. Some cars have been seen with the color written on the blackout such as "RGRN" for rallye green.

Why it has suddenly become a fad to write "D80" or "M20" on an otherwise nicely restored car is beyond me. There are plenty of engine bay road test photos in vintage mags and none of them show any of that.

I am curious about that as well. Other than the paint code you never see bleed thru of options on the firewall. Were the options written on the bare metal and then the paint code applied later after coat of primer? I have always wondered...

Found both D80 and M20 on the firewall. Looked to have been on the bare metal.

Also the big "R" in RGP was directly over the "M22" marking...
