View Full Version : Removing the AC in my Camaro
Brink_79Camaro Dec 21st, 05, 10:37 AM I eliminated all of the AC components in my 1979 Camaro except for the big ugly black box that sticks out of the firewall. I have been wanting to eliminate that black box, but I have no idea on how to do it. What is actually behind this AC box? Will the heater core be on the outside or inside of the firewall? Thanks...Steve
zdld17 Dec 21st, 05, 02:12 PM Double post, sorry.
zdld17 Dec 21st, 05, 02:13 PM Do you want AC? You can remove the entire box and replace it and the heater with an aftermarket type like Vintage . You can get rid if the factory box this way,,, I think, Check web site at VintageAir.com. They may have just the heater if thats all you need.
Brink_79Camaro Dec 21st, 05, 04:43 PM No, I do not want AC in my car. I was just looking to eliminate that big ugly AC box that is under my hood because I removed all of the other AC components. I was wondering if my heat will still work if I take that AC box out? I don't see why it wouldn't work...Will I need a different heater core? And will the heater core be on the inside or the outside of the firewall? I am just looking to smooth and clean the firewall up a little. Steve
BonzoHansen Dec 21st, 05, 05:27 PM Search over at nastyz28.com A lot of guys do this. There is a company that sells new heater boxes for swaps (the firewall on ac and non-ac 2nd gens are different). I think it is called american graffitti or something.
Did you keep all the old parts? A lot of us like AC. :) You should be able to sell the parts.

Brink_79Camaro Dec 21st, 05, 06:27 PM Hey, thanks Bonzo for the info. Yes, I did keep all of the AC components. The compressor and condensor are sitting on a shelf along with the hoses that attatch the two. I will have the AC box and the silver can attached when I take it out of the car. The AC didnt work when I bought the car 3 years ago, but I don't know if it just needed recharaged or what the deal was with it. If anyone is interested in it, let me know. I have no intent to ever put AC back in the car, so I would sell it all.
American Graffiti Dec 29th, 05, 10:13 AM This is Evan with American Graffiti and we do make an AC Delete Cover for 67-81 Camaro/Firebird they are $129.95 and can be bought on our website at www.americangraffiti.biz or call directly at 1-800-300-1494.
oitskev Dec 30th, 05, 02:58 PM Hey Brink,
I bought the American Graffiti box when I took the A/C off my 67. I felt it was a little overpriced, but it's a top quality piece. I first bought a blockoff plate from Classic Auto Air that turned out to be an unusable waste of money. I'd buy their A/C if I ever went back, but this piece was useless. The American graffiti box looks really cool and has a smooth semi-gloss finish.

DaveO Feb 6th, 06, 04:28 PM Found this thread while searching for ac info. I want to remove the factory ac from my 69, but I have a couple other questions for you ac experts before I do this (I have zero experience working on ac systems):
-How can I tell if the system is charged? The blower works, but it's not real cold. The guy I bought the car from said the system needed to be recharged. I didn't recharge because I live in Portland and don't really need it.
-Do I need to seal off any connections when I remove the system? I've been told that if it isn't sealed from outside air that the internals will be ruined - is that true? If the system hasn't been charged in a while, is it too late anyways?
-I'm not going to reinstall the system and someone said a lot of people would want it - so what's reasonable to ask?
