: Shifter problems lining up
Liveinaz Dec 21st, 05, 06:16 PM I am trying to install my motor and now seem to have a problem with the shifter lining up in the counsole floor...it is hitting the side nearest the driver and preventing the transmission from being centered.
I figure it is the wrong shifter, but doing a search, maybe I have the wrong transmission tail and was wondering if there was anyone or anywhere I can check if what I have will work...
I just bought a new competition plus shifter for a 68 Camaro so I am pretty sure that will fit once I get it, but I havent gotten it yet. The shifter in there is a hurst shifter but it was out of a GTO....
The numbers stampped on the tail part of my transmission are 3846429
The numbers on the main part or the front part are 3851325
The numbers on the side cover are 3831707
It is a muncie 4 speed transmission and has the nuts and washers holding the shift levers, not the bolts.
Can anyone tell me if this transmission will work in my car? I am installing it onto a 350 motor.
Thanks...
RS68SS Dec 21st, 05, 07:12 PM Hope this helps...The chevrolet by the numbers book...says your tranny is from a 1965 passenger, corvette, chevyII, or chevelle up to 2/65
good luck
RS68SS Dec 21st, 05, 07:14 PM additional info...look for main case..3925660, tail..3857584, and side cover 3884685.

JimM Dec 21st, 05, 07:15 PM I ain't gonna crawl under there and check numbers, but your trans sounds just like mine, and mine fits. Bet it's the GOAT shifter.
Liveinaz Dec 22nd, 05, 07:56 AM With the GTO shifter, it does not allow the transmission to be moved over far enough to bolt in the transmission mount. I ordered the correct shifter for a 68 Camaro so I am hoping with this transmission the new shifter will work. One problem after the other with trying to get this motor in there. No wonder I never became a mechanic!!! Or a plumber!!! It is frustrating to say the least.
go2fast Dec 22nd, 05, 10:19 AM You need the shifter and the mount kit. It bolts to a special plate that mounts under the trans mount with a U bolt around the tail.
JimM Dec 22nd, 05, 10:24 AM The "aftermarket style" shifter and install kit currently available from Hurst / Mr Gasket for a 68 w/console does not use any u-bolts. The mounting plate bolts to the tailshaft with 3 bolts, then the shifter bolts to the plate with 2 bolts.
go2fast Dec 22nd, 05, 05:46 PM You sure about that? I just bought one from Summit 2 weeks ago and it had the U-bolt. I also talked to the Mr Gasket people before I bought it and that's the kit they told me to order. Fits great and lines up perfectly with the console. Maybe I got one of the last old style ones? It's the same as I put in a '67 a couple years ago.
Liveinaz Dec 22nd, 05, 06:27 PM Go2Fast, you are correct...I got the shifter today and it does use a u-bolt around the back of the transmission. The front part of the plate attaches between the tranny mount and the housing towards the front.
JimM Dec 22nd, 05, 07:02 PM well, someones confused... maybe it's hurst / mr gasket "cost reducing" some of the kits? This setup is 6 years old, bought from Summit, comp plus with mounting kit for 67-68 camaro with console. Honest injun, no u-bolt to be found!
go2fast Dec 22nd, 05, 07:53 PM I guess it doesn't matter as long as it fits!
Liveinaz Dec 22nd, 05, 08:07 PM I guess the new ones are a different design...here are a couple pics of what I have...

crashent Dec 22nd, 05, 09:00 PM JimM, They must have sent you an install kit for a 1969... In your picture it shows a 1969 reverse lever with the extra hole for the back drive linkage, and it probly has the notches to be used with bolt style shift shafts(1969 and later)... The U-bolt mount is correct for 1967-68... The 1969 Hurst mount puts the shifter about 3/4" to the rear of the early U-bolt mount... What are the part numbers on your shift levers??? Hope this helps... Crash
JimM Dec 22nd, 05, 09:29 PM hmmm... that could be, although i'm sure i ordered the "right one" but it was years ago.... it does fit tho. oh well, s'pose it will be easier to sell with a 69 shifter.
Liveinaz Dec 23rd, 05, 06:34 AM Yeah, maybe you can keep the 69 shifter and replace everything else and turn it into a 69 Camaro....LOL Just kidding, IMO, 68 is the best, but we dont want to go there...HA
