This came up in conversation the other day. I didn't argue as I wasn't sure. I was told "all automatic SS cars got an open diff 12 bolt and all 4 speed equipped SS cars came with posi." We were talking about a 350 car... I know there is something about powerglide 350 SS cars getting a 10 bolt but don't recall the posi vs open trans thing. Any input?

TIA,

My 69 SS 350 4 Speed car came with a BR coded 3.08 12 bolt posi. Whoever ordered it apparently wanted highway gears.

Posi was an option on all Camaros. It was not standard on any of them, and any of them could be ordered with posi. If you got a 4.11 to 4.88 gear you got the posi.

All 69 small block SS's came with a 12 bolt axle, UNLESS you ordered a powerglide transmission. A 69 small block SS with a powerglide got a 10 bolt axle. No Camaro came with a posi axle as part of their basic package not even the Z28 or big blocks, nor was it a mandatory option on any car. It was an extra cost 40 dollar option.

He, He!!

I love it!! $40 option!! RIGHT-ON!!

That and the CHEAP, F-41 suspension upgrade that cost about the same back then when you were mixing and matching options to custom order your own like I did...

The 69 ss package included power disc, 3 speed (4 speed optional) or Turbo hydramatic trans, and 12 bolt differential.

The 69 ss package included power disc, 3 speed (4 speed optional) or Turbo hydramatic trans, and 12 bolt differential.

SS didn't include any of those, they were mandatory options that had to be ordered in addition to the SS package. In otherwords you had to pay extra for them over and above the price of the Z27 SS package. The SS package was an L48 engine, dual exhaust, some badges and stripes only, just like the Z28 option. You paid extra if you wanted a big block over and above the 281 bucks the SS package cost you. GM then added the price of all the other "mandatory options" into the car to arrive at the final configuration.

Technically an SS (and every other car except the Z28) came with a 3 speed manual transmission. If you didn't specify something else thats what you got. Any other transmission was an extra cost option. The combination of the engine and the transmission inturn determined what type (and ratio) of rear axle a buyer got.

I didn't say the options were free. I just stated they all had these options. I also stated the 4 speed and the Turbo trans were options.
