Hey everybody. I have a 1997 SS with an automatic. Is my transmission a 700R4? And if so, is it safe at all for me to shift it manually? I'm not sure which way will get me a better run but when I just leave it in drive and floor it, the rear tires chirp and sometimes even spin from 1st to 2nd.

I personally would change cars!!

Probably be cheaper and a whole lot easier, imho...

It's probably a 4L60. Which is basically an electronically controlled 700R4. What are your shift points. If you through in a shifter control module then you can adjust your rpm's. With the stock set up you will probably find that even if you try to shift manually it will either hold the gear after you shift until it hits the rpm level or it will shift early on it's own before you shift for the same reason. For the most consistent ET's get the controller and let it shift it's self.

Thanks for the info... It shifts at about 5500-5700 rpm. And you are correct, when i shift it myself, it holds it longer.
