: What to do with Z28 X77?
jhilts Dec 27th, 05, 03:26 PM My cousin bought a 69 Camaro to use the sheetmetal for his 69 SS vert. This is a Geogia car, no rust. However, we ran the trim tag and it looks to be a Z28 X77 car. He paid 500 for it and a 67 parts car.
The motor and transmission were not with the car. He is going to go back and see if the motor and transmission that was next to the car matches or not.
The CRG group states there were about 20,000 69 Z28s made, if I read it correctly. That doesn't seem that rare.
We have four options:
1) Restore and search for a matching motor and transmission
2) Restore and put in a non-matching motor
3) Restore and try to sell without a motor and transmission
4) Cut up and use the sheet metal on the convertible.
What would the cars value be for options 1,2 and 3?
sandiegoz28 Dec 27th, 05, 03:43 PM What's the condition of the car? You may want to post the trim tag and VIN to validate the car on this site (trim tag section)
And by all means, go see if the matching DZ engine is there.
As far as restoring the car goes - how much is there? Subframe? Interior pieces? Glass? 12 bolt rear axle? Front-end sheet metal? Front suspension/discs? Whether these are there and the condition they are in will greatly influencue your decision.
Even though they built over 20,000 '69 Z's, nice, real ones, restored correctly are somewhat hard to find.
My guess regarding value for your 1 or 2 is over $35,000. Values can exceed $50K for really nice restorations.
I'm not sure the point of 3. I would just sell it as is - you'll do better.
Finally, #4 - if it's a real Z, even in rough condition, I can't imagine cutting it up for a convertible.
Good luck and let us know the condition details - would be helpful.
Hans
ChevyThunder Dec 27th, 05, 04:32 PM Do not cut it up ! Take a picture of the VIN and trim tag and post it here. If you don't know how to post the photo email it to me and I will post it. I am sure you can make yourself a fair profit just selling the 69 X77 body
jhilts Dec 27th, 05, 04:34 PM The car was sitting in the woods since 80, I believe. The interior needs to be replaced. However, all the sheet metal is excellent. The sole reason he bought the car was to use the sheet metal on his convertible. The car had the Z28 emblems, but he didn't pay attention to it because he figured it was a clone. Plus, it didn't have the cowl hood. Which makes sense because the X77 was the bare bones model. The front discs are there and the 12bolt. However, the gears were removed. The car is missing a front bumper, grill and one headlight. Of course the motor and transmission is missing. Otherwise the car is complete. Glass is not cracked, but the tint is faded.
jhilts Dec 27th, 05, 04:57 PM What is ironic about this whole deal is that, he paid 8000 for the 69 SS350 convertible that needs all new sheet metal and has a bent subframe. He pays 500 for a sheetmetal car and the 500 dollar car may be worth more than the convertible in the end.
Peter Constantine Dec 27th, 05, 05:47 PM Please don't cut that car up. Sell it as is and find another donor for the ragtop.
PairOf69's Dec 27th, 05, 06:32 PM You know I could use a parts car for my X11 how does $450.00 sound? ;)
Eric Kammerer Dec 27th, 05, 07:48 PM You're missing option #5, flipping it, which is just clean it up and throw it on Z-bay or sell it to one of the guys here as is.
Three big questions
1. is it real, which if it has been sitting that long it probably is. As Van said, get some tag and VIN info and get the word here.
2. Does the car have a title? If not, can you get a good one? My guess is no and no. That will hurt some.
3. Did you guys wear masks (to hide your faces) when you "stole" that car?
jhilts Dec 27th, 05, 08:28 PM Masks..LOL...
I talked to my cousin a little more about the car. He is going to register the car tomorrow. In Georgia, you just need a bill of sale.
What through him and the owner off, was the fact that one fender had a 396 SS emblem on it. My cousin looked and saw that it was still an original 69 fender and thought cool, I can still use this whole car for his convertible. He even stated to the previous owner "looks like someone through some Z28 badges on it" and the previous owner said "yep". They both were clueless.
However, it clearly has X77 on the trim tag. I am going to post the entire tag tomorrow. I wish I would have saved the information, but it was a Norwood car, Blue with Black standard interior. I just can't remember the date. I think it was August (but I am not 100% sure). He asked me not to post the trim tag and vin until we get it registered.
The previous owner had replaced the motor that was in it, with a corvette motor and transmission. He never got it running and said screw it and it sat for 10 - 15 years. My cousin is a big block fan so when he looked at the motor and transmission that came out of the car, he thought small block "not interested". Well he is going back this weekend to see if it is the DZ motor. Now that would be lucky.
67stang Dec 27th, 05, 08:31 PM lol. sell the thing to me. heck trade it. i have a couple parts cars
Dave69Z Dec 28th, 05, 12:02 PM Sell it, Don't cut it up. Even without the original motor, and in rough shape its worth more than you paid for it.
jhilts Dec 28th, 05, 01:52 PM We are going to restore it and try to find another donor car for the convertible.
We had planned to finish my 68, paint and sell a 69 chevelle, restore his 69 vert and lastly do something with a 64 GTO clone.
However, the 64 GTO clone got booted, thanks to the Z28. I think we are going to put both his 64 cars on Ebay. Not 100% sure.
jg95z28 Dec 28th, 05, 02:35 PM Why can't we all find diamonds in the rough like this? :D
Assuming its an original Z/28 and its in the condition you say, its still worth a lot of money to the right person, even without the matching drivetrain. Without photos and more information I can see a range of $10K-$20K as-is depending on the market.
ChevyThunder Dec 28th, 05, 03:26 PM Lets see some pictures !
jhilts Dec 28th, 05, 03:49 PM I will be down to Columbus the weekend after next to work on my 68. I will take some pics then and post them Sunday night.
Here is the trim tag, I will post the vin when he gets it registered.
ST 69-12437 NOR 318270
TR 711 71 71
05A X77
I will post a picture of the trim tag also
Eric Kammerer Dec 28th, 05, 07:25 PM Lemans Blue with standard black interior, very nice.
This is going to turn out like the TC member that bought a crossram intake for $100.
Buck Dec 28th, 05, 07:37 PM and I'm sure you'd pay $100.00 or $200.00 for the matching DZ engine???:clonk:
brucelbryan Dec 28th, 05, 07:40 PM why can't i ever get this lucky??? By all means, I agree with everybody else, save the z, don't even think about cutting it up...if it does indeed turn out to be real. There are a few rebuilt dz 302's out there, nom but correct...may turn out to worth quite a bit eventually
SY1 Dec 28th, 05, 08:00 PM The X77 car while not rare, it is a rare find today. X77 had nothing to do with a cowl hood or not. The ZL2 (cowl) hood was an option mid year and most Z28s regardless of the X code did not recieve them. You'd never know it today.
IMO the X77 is far more valuable than any small block SS car, convert or not (I don't like converts, so to me a convert is worth less, however most others disagree). If he's bent on restoring the SS and not the X77, sell it. It will bring you enough cash today to buy all new sheet metal for the SS and probably some change left over towards paying someone to hang it, if you don't want to do it yourself.
Tell your cousin to beware of todays SB. At 434, 454 cids they'll run with or outrun many BB's and have a much better weight distribution doing it. Also a true 302 motor, built right will embarass many BB owners when they realize they've just been beaten by a motor with 150 less cubes, I've enjoyed doing this myself many times.
Great find and thanks for sharing the story with us! You don't hear of these experiences very often today.

BTW, you wings need to take it easy on the STARS!

jhilts Dec 29th, 05, 11:03 AM My cousin is going to check out the motor that came out of the Z28 this weekend. I know we need a DZ code. Where is the code and what else do we need to look for? We know a muncie is mounted to that motor.
SY1 Dec 29th, 05, 08:56 PM Rob the Wings can't afford to take it easy on anyone! I'd like to trade you Osgood for your goal tender though. Ozzie is too inconsistant. I was at the game last week against the Blue Jackets and it went to a shoot out. When I realized who Columbus had shooting on us I thought we were in trouble with Osgood in the net. But Federov couldn't tie it for Columbus and the Wings prevailed........barely. The took the Blue Jackets for granted and it almost cost them. I thought it would've been funny for Federov to shoot from center ice on Osgood, knowing that's how the Wings lost to the Blues some years ago when Osgood was in net.
What in the world happened to Darrien Hatcher when the Wings got him from you guys? I felt he was a great player in Dallas, but never did anything up here before we traded him off. I don't understand that at all. I still think he can play, but he didn't show it in Detroit, always showed it against Detroit though!

And then along came the Ottawa Senators..... :D
I sure wish these two teams would get the opportunity to play this season, but they don't. Perhaps in the finals if they can both keep it together. I don't know how Ottawa is injury wise, but the Wings are pretty beat up right now, two of their better defensemen out and their top goal tender out, their captain is also out. But nothing more than most teams go through during any season. They just try to outscore the opposition right now.
Man talk about D, Senators hae given up 20 less goals than anyone else in the league, many teams have given up almost double what they have. Is it just great defense or a hot goaltender, or both? Don't turn your back on Buffalo too long either, they're only 3 points down!
Enjoy your season, looks like a great one. Maybe see you in the finals.
olympic69 Jan 2nd, 06, 12:02 AM ...ooops, kinda hijacked the thread...BTW, we called DH "Big Goon" Hatcher, I hate to say it, but dont miss him. "MarTy Man" ROCKS. We went to the "DET" came however- when you guys wuped us, and the whole team looked lame. AND...then theres the DALLAS COWBOYS ( this was the most entertaining year in a while however).
Happy 2006!!!
Rob-
where it is 66 degrees F at 0100 Hrs. as I type this- its all crazy!!!

musclecarjohn Jan 2nd, 06, 05:40 PM Hey...how'd this turn into a hockey thread?
Seriously jhilts, you know by now you're not cutting this one up.
Good find...you did well.
LeMans Blue w/standard Black interior is the bomb...one of my 3 most favorite '69 Z/28 color combos. And a flat hood to boot.
I hope the motor turns out to be the matching # DZ!
olympic69 Jan 2nd, 06, 10:18 PM I know- sorry about that!
Cool deal on the X-77...
