View Full Version : Window crank handle problems
davepl Dec 27th, 05, 03:49 PM I picked up a set of 4 reproductioon window crank handles from Classic Industries. I was careful to order the ones for the standard door panels, as apparently there are different thicknesses.
When I install them, however, they don't seem to hold themselves in deep enough to make a good grab of the teeth: they can freewheel if you don't press in on them.
On cursory inspection they look about the same as the originals, but there must be something I'm missing.
Anyone run into this before, and have any suggestions?
Thanks!

rojo Dec 27th, 05, 03:54 PM Can you feel/hear when the clip seats into the groove?
davepl Dec 27th, 05, 04:27 PM Yes, the clips definately seat because you can't get them back off without the clip removal tool.
rojo Dec 27th, 05, 05:25 PM I don't think there is any difference in the cranks, only in the regulators, Ricks catalog kind of confirms this. That being the case and the clips are seating then I don't see how they could slip unless one is worn or there is a manufacturing flaw. Not sure of the quality or correctness but can buy one at Advance Auto for 6 bucks just to see if there's a difference.
I tried to pass a link but it didn't work, go to www.partsamerica.com (http://www.partsamerica.com) then search for "window handle". And check out Ricks at www.firstgen.com (http://www.firstgen.com)
trex70 Dec 27th, 05, 11:03 PM I bought my window handles from Oreilly auto parts (motormite) and have had to problem. I think I paid 5 bucks each.
Everett#2390 Dec 28th, 05, 07:15 AM Do the OE handle(s) work?
Check the depth of the splines between the new handle and the old handle, seems the new handle splines are shallower compared to the OE ones.
69X11SS Dec 29th, 05, 08:32 AM I had a problem with two replacements. The splines were not deep enough so the handles would not go on far enough to seat and lock. I took a dremel with a small bit and deepened the grooves. They work fine now.
Straight-line-69 Dec 29th, 05, 11:24 AM Yeah,..those repos have the clip-groove too far down the sleeve-shaft.
What I've done is grind or drill the hole a bit deeper and file a bit off the stud that holds the handle to make it all work.
You can also find these window crank handles at your local Pep Boys for about $6 if you mess one up.
Don't you love repo parts.
As a side note,..I once got excited about finding a good deal for four NOS door handles. They arrived and the plastic/rubber part was yellowed to almost brown,..unuseable. Live and learn.
jcdubs Dec 29th, 05, 01:37 PM I had the same problem, with the 67 repo's, Just like Straight-line-69 said. The clip-groove is not correct.
Unreal Dec 30th, 05, 03:50 PM I had the same problem with one of my NOS ones. I took a dremel with a stone, and ground the hole a little deeper. i preferred that to grinding on the window mech. pin. I was afraid I might damage my pristine original door panels. Of course, I could have removed the panel.
