Just got a 71 coupe - Has anyone converted the two back-up lights to
tail / stop / turn light use. What about brighter bulbs or LED's ?

I don't know anything about your question but thought I would give you the link to a second gen site which might be able to help more specifically. http://www.nastyz28.com/

Th problem with LEDs when used in a turn signal application is they do not have enough resistance to let the bi-metal strip in the turn signal circuit function correctly. It will never cycle, hence no on off flash. You can use them if you wire a resistor in series with the circuit (I don't know the exact value but it shouldn't take much).

For brake lights, back up lights they will work well, though I question how much brighter if any they would be (unless there were a bunch of LEDs in the replacement bulb). Laws in most state require illumination of objects at a fixed distance; unless tested and DOT approved they may be illegal.

I have led panels in my '68 Camaro with RS taillights. They're incredibly bright and the turn signals work properly. We replaced the standard flashers with electronic versions that plugged right into the stock sockets in the fuse panel. There is a picture of them in the second page of my sig. Great upgrade!
