If it is an LT1 (Z28), then I would look first at the fuel pump and then at the opti-spark. I am really going to need more information to narrow this down, though. Do you have access to a fuel pressure tester or a spark tester?? If you don't then I'm afraid I'm not goig to be of much further help. Does it stop dead (immediately), or start sputtering and stumbling before it dies?? How many miles does it have?? Do you have to drive it to make it happen?? If its a '93, pull codes, if you are not sure how, do a search on this site, I'm sure it is explained more than once. After you extract them, what are the codes?? jldawg Dec 28th, 05, 02:35 PM had mechanic look and they said no codes were found he also said the distributer was bad would this cause this jldawg Dec 28th, 05, 02:36 PM i will get the tools i need just not sure where to look jldawg Dec 28th, 05, 02:37 PM sputters before it dies 200000 miles 69X11SS Dec 28th, 05, 03:04 PM If you have a Z, it sounds like your Opti Crap is going out. It isn't a real hard job to replace it but it is an expensive piece. I have replaced mine twice and I only have 110,000 miles on the car. The first one went out at 95,000. I replaced it and the water pump, timing set and various other parts in the rebuild. The brand new GM water pump went out 6 months later and took out the new opti. There is only a 90 day warranty on over the counter parts. I sprang for the dealer installing the new stuff and with that I get a lifetime warranty on parts and labor. If you can afford the initial outlay and you expect to keep the car it might make sense. It gives me piece of mind. jldawg Dec 28th, 05, 03:15 PM thanks zbo2 Dec 28th, 05, 09:15 PM could be something as stupid as the fuel filter........trust me on this one.........i spent a lot of cash changin parts cause i had changed the fuel filter 2 months earlier and didn't even give it a thought...........guess what, the damn 5 dollar filter was plugged solid....................did the exact same thing as yours ! jldawg Dec 29th, 05, 07:23 AM i already changed the fuel filter and the coil niether has helped iwas hoping it would of been that simple jldawg Dec 29th, 05, 09:05 AM i was talking with the gm parts place and he didn't know what i was talking about when i said opti spark is this odd or could it be called something else in his parts book jldawg Dec 29th, 05, 11:45 AM today she started ran for 40 min so i shut her down waited about 20 min and she turned over but wouldn't start i am puzzled Everett#2390 Dec 29th, 05, 02:41 PM Do the old trick of pulling a plug wire off from the spark plug and hold it away from the engine about 1/4 inch and crank the engine over. If no spark, replace the opti-spark unit, also known as the distributor assembly. MSD has came out in the aftermarket with an Opti-spark replacement. I wonder if it works any better. Have had several friends at work replaced their Opti-crap units, a couple several times. novaderrik Dec 30th, 05, 04:05 AM the MSD stuff isn't the whole optispark- it is just a cap and rotor. which is what goes out, anyways. GM just likes selling those $400 distributors to people that don't know any better. Everett#2390 Dec 30th, 05, 06:44 AM Here's what I'm talking about, earlier model with air hoses, imagine that! http://www.msdignition.com/2006/06-4.htm jldawg Dec 30th, 05, 11:32 AM thank you i will look at that for sure. jldawg Dec 31st, 05, 09:59 AM am going to attempt to replace the distributer cap and rotor can anyone give me any helpfull tips the book says i have to take the water pump off and the drive belt do i need any special tools as the book doesn't say thanks for any tips on this project. |
