Hello!

For my first brake system overhaul I used a "special US" DOT 3 fluid. The warehouse told me that this fluid is necessary, not using european DOT 3. At this time it was no problem, because I ordered a few other things.

No I have some changes at my break system and want to use "normal" fluid=> What is your experience?

Perhaps DOT 5 is possible?

The only way you can use DOT 5 is if you flush your entire system with DOT 5 before filling it or the best way is to put DOT 5 into a new system. Do not mix DOT 5 with DOT 3. The chemicals are not compatable and you may experience catastrophic brake loss.

I have read that the European DOT 5 is glycol based, like US DOT 5.1, and that they do not have a silicone based fluid there... If so, you can mix it with your DOT 3. Do not mix if it is silicone based.

I don't know the differences between Euro & US DOT 3&4 fluids. The DOT ratings are for the wet and dry boiling points here in the states. I use DOT4 unless all I have is DOT3. As long as they're glycol based, they should mix. Maybe you should call that warehouse back and ask them why they said to use 'special US' fluid.
