I am a die hard hockey fan and live in Calgary. My team (Flames) are playing Vancouver right now in Game 7. After watching this nail biter right through Vancouver dodges a late penalty and flukes a goal with 4 seconds left in regulation to force game 7 OT. I can only sit in here and type this as it's too much to watch. I will type the update when I see who wins this. Either way, both teams are phenominal and they played their hearts out. Best series I have seen in years and no doubt one that will be talked about for a long time to come. Go Flames Go!

That would be a fun series to watch as we seldom get to play the Flyers. I do remember the Flames walking in to Philly and knocking them off a few months ago when they were on a hot streak and then we took out bean town the next night.

First we gotta take out Detroit. Then the winner of the Colorado San Jose match-up. Then we get the Feast on the East. lmao

I agree this has been a very exciting round 1. The game sevens the last couple of nights have been played wide open and I'd like to thank the officials for allowing that, it really ads to the sense of urgency in game sevens. Toronto and Ottawa has been an awesome series as I predicted it would. Calgary and Vancouver was also a lot of fun to watch. I'd hoped for the Bruins to pull it out against Montreal, but history has not been kind to them in that match up. I think the Boston fans showed a lot of class when one night after Montreal's fans booing the American anthem the series returned to Boston and during the Canadien anthem the Boston fans cheered loudly.

I think the Wings / Flames series will be another exciting matchup. I hope our D can keep up with their speed and strong forechecking game. Remember how the Predators would send in two guys even on penalty kills to prevent the Wings from breaking out and never really get rolling. It stymied them for the first four games, look for the Flames to do more of this because they are much better at it than Nashville. That'll be key for Detroit. I think the Avs take down the Sharks as they did throughout the season. In the East Philly and Toronto will ge another good matchup, too close to call. I think Tampa Bay may be surprised by Montreal.

I'd love a Leafs and Wings finals, wanted to see that for a long time now. But there are 8 really solid teams in the hunt right now and you can't start looking beyond the series you're in or you'll end up sitting out the next couple rounds. I just hope round two can prove to be as exciting as round one was. Belfour was awesome last night as was Joe N. and Domi. Lalime had a great series until last night giving up the two soft ones. But in his defense those were threaded, the one could only have gone in standing on end as there was only a glimmer of light showing in the five hole. I guess the luck was against the Senators last night.

Anyone remember a few years ago the water throwing incident that took place when Domi was in the box? That fan thought he'd give Domi a piece of his mind and ended up falling into the box and Domi took it to him. Kind of like teasing a caged lion. The only other time I've witnessed this kind of fan stupidity was in Phoenix at a game with the Astros. We lucked out and got seats right behind the dugout. A couple of cocky guys showed up sitting next to us with their trophy girl friends. This guy for the Astros earlier in the week punched out a team mate in batting practice that had cut in line in front of him, so he's already a loaded cannon. He stikes out on a called third strike ending the inning and the Phoenix crowd goes nuts. As he's walking back to the dugout everyone sits down, everyone except these two morons trying to impress their girls. They stand there hanging over the roof of the dugout and as the Astros player is about to step into the dugout they get his attention and yell "way to stand there and take it"! He paused for a second and glared, I expected an exchange but nothing more happened. Must have been the $8 beer working on them.

OK Kids,

Time to upset your Java and put things in persective for all you Hockey Town fans. As much as I like the motor city, and all the Wings fans I have met in the Saddledome when they come follow their beloved Wings to play on a western road trip, I gotta take some wind out of your sails.

Yes that was us that won game one!
Yes that is us that will win Game 2 this aft!
And yes we will prevail over the wings in 5 Games!

Sorry to give it to you guys but your team is getting old and we will have banged them up by the end of game three. As for Cherios and Hatcher, their point shots will not stimy our beloved Kiprusoff. Look for Cujo to crumble in Game 2 and Iginla to add a couple of markers in the second period.

Somebody got handed a loss at the Joe today. Iginla was no factor for the second game in a row, but he did win the fight he started against Hatcher, so you gotta respect that. He was obviously frustrated the second half of the game. But all the stupid penalties the Flames took with 6 minutes to go took them out of the game. They better restrain their frustration because without the dumb penalties it could've been 3-2 and they may have been able to tie it. They lost their composure and it ends up 5-2. I'm sure Sutter will have a lot to discuss with his players about taking themselves out of the game like that.

Some traffic in front of Kipper makes a big difference. I was kind of hoping to see Legace back in net. But at least we don't have to have the distraction of Hasek this post season, the guys is a plague to the team chemistry, he should've never been allowed to come back. The only reason his option was picked up was to prevent him from going to the Avs. That would've been the best thing for the Wings because Abeisher (spelling?) has been really strong for them this year.

I don't think we'll see anyone celebrating after game 5, this one is going at least 6.

If the Wings are having fits the the Calgary Flames...what do you think the Sharks are going to do to them? I've been a die hard Red Wings fan for a long time and they've had themselves a HELL of a run. They were definitely the team of the 90's. But I really think their run is over. One reason for this is no Scotty Bowman. The second reason is...no Goalie either. I just hope a team get's to win it this year that has never won it before. Not Calgary...they won one in '89. That's not long enough of a wait.

My Prediction...

NHL Finals: San Jose vs. Philadelphia

San Jose in 6.

Bowman is missed, but he had to go sometime :D

Regarding Detroit Goalies - Cujo didn't lose the cup for us last season and goal tending isn't losing it for us this season, the close scores show that. Detroit needs to get their chit together consistently, not a game here and a game there offensively

Wings have many problems. The only goaltending problem was created by the front office when they allowed Hasek to come out of retirement and picked him up again for his final year of his contract. Cujo was not the problem last year, he is not the problem this year. Legace is as good a back up as you can ask for. He'd be a starter on most clubs. All I can say is thank God Hasek is gone for good this time. He got what he wanted and left a team and a city high and dry. What a selfish individual. After the problems he faced at home he decided suddently he wants to play again? Give me a break. Thanks for the 02 cup, but no thanks your help isn't needed here any longer.

Some of the oldest Wings need to consider hanging up the skates after the season is over. This should make room for guys like Williams, Devereaux, Rivers and Gorgenko when he is healed and ready to play. The current youth stars Datsyuk and Zetterberg need to step it up, it's May and time to play the kind of hockey you're being paid to play. Datsyuk particularly is a liability in the playoffs. He's skating like he's uncomfortable out on the ice and that's keeping him from his game. He needs to repax and skate like he does in the regular season. It's easy to shine in November playing Columbus, but if he is going to carry this team in the future it's time to start showing what you're made of now when it counts. Last year he disappeared in round one, the entire offense did and Cujo took the heat unjustly.

Hatcher is the only physical player on the ice, but he's not skating hard, makes bad passes breaking out and has no shot. What happened to Macarty? He used to be a favorite, he's invisible on the ice this post season. Shanahan might as well be playing golf.
Hull has a great shot, but no physical game whatsoever. Draper is the only one playing with heart.

If they continue playing this poorly the Wings don't deserve to win, if they do get by the Flames I don't know how they'll get past the Sharks or Tampa Bay. They just don't want it bad enough.

Calgary skated a heck of a game and outplayed the Wings in almost every aspect. They came out hard and fast and were fun to watch, it must be an exciting time for Calgary fans. They are hungry and the Wings are resting on their past achievements. I hope they're comfortable.

Just when I thought Calgary was going to pull off game 4 and take a commanding 3-1 series lead, the Wings get a marker from another unsung game hero. They got goals from three players who have all marked their first post season markers to tie the series up at 2-2. Good games Detroit.

I look forward to tilting a few more pints with you guys come Saturday at 1:00 PM. KRhat yeah I missed that one. Steve hasn't played this season to the level he did before his injury. But that's to be expected. Even when he's not playing like the Steve of old, what he does off the ice for this team is priceless. Game four however he was out there finishing checks, sometimes awkwardly, but he was taking it to the Flames physically, leading by example. If a guy who's had the kind of surgery he did can come back and play that kind of game then why the heck can't Datsyuk, Hull and some of the others who are slacking? Deveraux, Dandenault both got it done as did Homer. I said it before, time to get some of the young up and comings a permanent spot and stop running them back and forth between Grand Rapids and Detroit. They're ready to take the spots of some of the guys past their prime.

I think Game 5 is Detroit's. But it's time to send a message to the Wings non-producers and let them watch the game from the bench a little more.

Saddledome crowd is going to be silenced tonight. This one is going 7. I think you'll see the Redwings wake up and show up for the first time this series and take it to the Flames. Even so they don't deserve to move on with how poorly they've played. But I think you're going to see it go seven.

Colorado is going 7 as well. Coming back home, where they haven't played well I see them still hanging around to bother the Sharks. As far as the Avs goaltending goes, Aebisher can play for us anytime. He's been outstanding this season. I remember game 7 in the conference finals 2 years ago in Detroit. Detroit had been all but eliminated from that series too and in game seven knocked Roy from the net in the second period after Patrick gave up 6 goals in a game seven. I remember being at the game and when Aebisher came in to replace Roy everytime he made a save he heard 19,000 fans chant "we want ROY!".

The difference in the playoffs the last two years has been the departure of Bowman and Federov. You don't miss Sergei during the regular season, but during the playoffs the Wings aren't nearly as good without him. All these players that take pay cuts and sign on with the Wings to "automatically get their name on the cup" better wake up and realize you don't get there on past accomplishments, ego doesn't get you there either or we'd have a lock on it. Heart and hard work will win it. The Wings have shown neither so far this post season.

OverAnxious
May 3rd, 04, 02:13 PM
I will agree the Wings don't appear to be hungry enough this post season. I disagree about Federov - He can be an amazing player, when he wants to. He was too into himself. His departure to Anahiem pretty much summed that up.

If the Wings expect to get past Calgary - they need to step up and play with much more heart and sole and consistency we haven't seen much in this series...

GO WINGS.

They've done it again!

Martin Gelinas scored with 46 seconds left in the first overtime period on Monday to give the Flames a 1-0 win over Detroit and advance Calgary to the Conference Finals. The Flames take the series in six games and improbably shutout the Red Wings high-powered offence for the second straight game and send the Wings golfing.

Boy did I call it wrong! It did get real quiet at the Saddledome, then I realized I'd hit my mute button on my remote. Redwings got trapped trying to play the same style game as the Flames and moved further from their finesse game again tonight. What is that 8 scoreless periods for the Wings? I agree time to let about 5 or 6 guys go, hall of famers or not. CBC called out the names of the guys who let down the team, no need to repeat them, if you watched you know who they were, again this post season.

Joe don't get me wrong, I was never a Federov fan. He is self centered much like Hasek. I was vocal real early with how happy I was to see them both go. I don't understand why anyone wanted Hasek back, but many did. I reluctantly see now though how much Federov is missed in the playoffs. Datsyuk and Zetterberrg certainly can't get the job done. Don't get me started on Hull, I wonder if he's ever checked anyone in his life. Cujo again this post season was great. But Detroit had no offense, can't coach heart and will, has to be there from the start.

As far as the Flames hot play in OT, CBC commented as the OT began how big an advantage it was for Detroit because Calgary has been terrible in OT, lost the last 7 or so home OT games. So it's just that much more of a hill they had to climb and they climbed it well. My hats off to the Flames, and their fans. It was pretty awesome the sea of red they turned out in. Even Mike Vernon who used to play for the Wings was inspired by the fan enthusiasm Calgary has.

Good luck to Calgary in their run for the cup. Hope to see you there paired up against the Leafs.

hugger_sixty_nine
May 4th, 04, 08:12 AM
Well put, and tough to add to. What I will say is this. The series was fair, and both played well last night. I feel bad for Cujo who played a stellar game only to have the season fall into his lap at the wrong time and on the wrong side of the net. He was solid and deserved a better outcome. I saw both teams skating end to end and this is where the Flames usually win. Boston, Philly, Vancouver and Colorado all tried to deal with the flames speed and if they opened their game up to that style they lost. Dallas was the smart one who played the trap and broke the flames speed down. If we would have played Dallas, we might of gotten smoked.

Thank god Kipper came along as he is what this team needed. I have witnessed 2 excellent series so far and look forward to 2 more yet. One to squeak by the western conference final, and the ultimate game to play for the right to raise the cup. Cheers to that and once again....

Go Flames Go!

With a stike looming for next year and an almost certain salary cap in place before the NHL resumes, the landscape of the league will definitely change. Many of the familiar faces in Detroit will be gone due to either age or economics. But wow....you can't ignore the trail that this powerhouse has blazed.

In the past 10 years: 4 Stanley Cup Finals appearances, 5 Conference finals appearances, 4 Western Conference Championships, 7-time Central Division Champions, 3 Stanley Cup Championships, 62 wins in 1996. 4 Presidents trophies, 3 Con Smyth's Trophies, 4 Norris Trophies, 2 Selke Awards. Plus all the individual team and player milestones.

What an amazing ride it has been. I will always remember the night of June 7th 1997. Still to this day, the most magical moment in Detroit sports history. Thank you to Steve Yzerman and the rest of the players who contributed to this great run as well as Scotty Bowman and his assistants. And to Ken Holland for his brilliance and Mike Illitch for opening up the check book.

But most importantly...thanks for all the great memories I can take with me. I have no regrets.

And now for a special announcement for all the bandwagon fans that jumped on from 1998-2004!!!!!!!

The Red Wings Bandwagon has officially come to a close my friends. Ahh, but don't fret...in a few short days you can be a part of another bandwagon that's just getting started up the road in Auburn Hills. Yes, that's right folks.....THE DETROIT PISTONS BANDWAGON!!! Eastside Sports is offering a special right now for all you spineless yuppie turds. For a limited time, bring in your Draper, Maltby, and McCarty shirts and receive Wallace, Prince, and Billups jersey's in exchange. Hurry while supplies last!!!! Oh....and make sure all you stuffy rich socialites buy up all the season tickets to the Palace next season too. Remember.....the Pistons are the 'in thing' now. The Red Wings are yesterday's news. No one understands more than you that status is important. Don't be left out in the cold, swallow up those tickets and drive up those prices at the gate today before it's too late!!! Hurry, hurry, hurry!!!!

Basketball would be interesting if played on ice. I've actually turned down free Pistons tickets, the game doesn't do anything for me. As far as turning over my McCarty jersey, or Konstaninov jersey for that matter to quote Charleston Heston, "they'll have to pry them from my dead cold hands".

Also agree they need some major changes, but part of the problem is some of the young guns didn't get the job done either. It's easy to target the old guys like Chelios and Yzerman, but at 42 and 39 they've got more fire than most of the young guys and give their all.

Five stars to Schneider, Cujo, Yzerman, Draper, Holmstrom, Dandenault and Legace. They showed up EVERY night. Lets not forget that Cujo was twice sent to the minors this season. There's a sound business decision. I can't wait to see the others they make this off season.

I don't buy the "hot goaltender" excuse either. Kipper was good, but every goaltender still in it at this point is more than solid. Back around 1990 I watched Stefan make 52 saves one night for the Wings. I thought man if he could play this way every night. Cujo did, he made 43 last night. When you make 43 saves you should be winning those games. But it also says your defense is broken and the fact you can't score 2 years straight in the playoffs says your offense is broken as well. Illitch has plenty of suites available for some of the wingers who'd like to watch the game. Plus you won't spill your beer.

Yep there's a little more room on the band wagon right now, but let's see what shakes out over the Summer. I hear the winds of change blowing in off Lake Michigan from Grand Rapids area towards the Motor City. Maybe sending a few hungry players our way.

Oh we're bringin it! And San Jose is going to be buying it! Farm and all, cause when we are done beating them into the boards, they'll need some rest on the farm. Heck, maybe they'll even send Nabokov back to the farm when the Villnious School Master KIPRUSOFF hands them a lesson on goal keeping.

Top that with the fact that Daryl Sutter knows that team better than anyone and you have a match made playoff series. No doubt it will be fast. I predict the flames in 6 games opening the series with a 4-0 tilt in our favour.

Don't get me started on Hull, I wonder if he's ever checked anyone in his life. Cujo again this post season was great. But Detroit had no offense, can't coach heart and will, has to be there from the start.
I agree, just like 2003 - Lack of offense lost it for the Wings :(

At least we can watch the Pistions in the post-season and watch the Tigers finally start to develop :D

Yeah the Tigers are a different team. Still 2 good starting pitchers away from being competitive for the division. Everyone at work laughed when I said they be .500 this year with all the off season dealings they made. This team could break the record for runs scored in a season and still only come in around .450-.500. They are exciting to watch, but losing after scoring 8 or 10 runs a night sure is strange to watch.

Well guys,

I started this post April 19th when the flames beat Vancouver, and since then we have eliminated the Canucks, retired Detroit, and have moved onto the conference final. Game 1 was played Sunday vs. San Jose and the Flames beat the Sharks by a score of 4-3 in OT. Bring on game 2 and Go Flames Go!

Hello Jan,

Well from a Canadian hockey fan working for the Swedes ( GUNNEBO ), to a fellow Camaro man in Sweden, that was an excellent game and series. As you are aware, Team Canada has a long history in this game and has prevailed more in international play than most others. Being as how we Canadians are part of North America, we tend to take the US / Canada rivalry a bit more to heart, but the European clubs have been coming into their own lately. One of these days to Swedes are going to hand our Asses back to us after they’re done kicking them, but until then, we will enjoy our National Game and the International Championship Trophy!

I love......."Hockey"

Well, we had hoped for revenge for last years final when you got that very much discussed goal in the sudden death. With Peter Forsberg and Niclas Lidstroem in the lineup we had a better chance but as often a lead with 3-1 is not as comfortable as one might think, at least not in Hockey!

And Niedlemeyers slaughter on Forsberg should have gotten him a full match penalty in my opinion. It was real scary.

Anyway congratulations.

Go Flyers! Another blowout last night. They crushed Toronto that one game and now TB. I've never seen the Flyers capable of scoring 5 or more goals in a playoff game until this year. We've been waiting almost 30 years for a realistic chance and it's wierd to see them play like this.

Glad to see another Flyers fan Jeff. I have called the playoff's quite well thus far and have 2 wagers out on the east and west series. I called for Calgary to meet the Flyers early in this post and still think it will end up that way. I put 20 on Calgary to win the west, and 20 on Philly to win the east. Hopefully I am right all the way and we will see an awesome 7 game Playoff with Calgary taking the trophy. tongue.gif

No worries RJ,

As the proud purveyors of smack and speed, the Flames will take all the flash away from LaCavalier and our former lil' tike Flame St. Louis. In addition to that, they are about to be introduced to the "Stone Wall" Kiprosoff over the next week. That alone will cause them more embarassment than they are used to. Look for Regehr and Commodore to colapse on the little bolts and take away any electricity they might have had.

Game 1 starts tomorrow!

It's tied 2-2 right now in the first overtime and I am cheering on my Calgary Flames! When I came in here there was a few minutes left in the OT period. Jonesy you're right on. Calgary fans bleed for this moment like most Northern hockey fans. You just don't find that on the same level in the sun belt. I went to the Western conference finals game 7 in Detroit versus the Avs. The Joe was really rockin that night. Unbelievably fun. But when I look at how the whole city of Calgary is so into their team it is pretty awesome. If Tampa fans can't get excited about a game 5 in the finals, they simply don't deserve a franchise. Especially one as good as they've got this year.

Tough to watch this one too. Calgary has a demanding game going where they lead the series 3-2 with 16 seconds left and are playing a 2-2 tie this game. Calgary should win this 4-2 before it's over. OT is coming up. Woooooohoooooo!

Man this is tough to watch. The entire playoffs, Calgary has outplayedthe opposition, and tonight they own the bolts. With only a few minutes left on the 1st OT period, Calgary has outplayed and outshot TB by a landslide.

In the next couple of minutes, Calgary should eliminate the TB once and for all, and drink from Lord Stanleys cup. One thing for sure is that Kiprusoff has earned it. Besides that, the fans have earned it.

Heres to the NHL and Calgary winning the cup in Game six!

Besides, how can Tampa win when they ain't had one representitive in this thread with over 99 posts. Pathetic for what they claim to be a town of hockey fans. Man I love Detroit and San Jose. At least they have some fans who can rally up!

Well it ain't over yet. Bolts came back to snatch a goal in the second overtime period which takes this series to a game 7. As for the Bolts smoking the Flames? Kinda of an oxymoronic statement given the fact that all NHL analysts have already stated the fact that the Lightning have been badly outplayed by Calgary in each outing. Just look at the shots on goal and that becomes a no brainer.

Heres to s great game 7 and the end of a series. No matter who gets it, I am proud of my team and their accomplishments this year.

Well now that the series is over, I must be humble and congratulate the Tampa Bay team and their fans who definitely earned the cup with their performance in games 6 & 7.

I will make no excuses as they did outplay the Flames in the last 2 games and deserved the grail. Enjoy it Tampa!

And here's to my home team Calgary Flames who knocked off the 3-2-1 seeded teams in the west to advance to the cup final and secure the conference title.

Now we can all wait and see what happens with the NHL next year and hope that there is a season. I think it will be a year before we see any hockey as forecast a full season lockout before the players agree to salary caps.

Hugger that's a gracious post. But as I am not a fan of either team, (you guys introduced my team the Redwings to a new member named "Summerov"), I was however pulling for Calgary. I am happy for Andreychuk, he has played a long time and is a class guy, I enjoyed watching him hoist the cup. Richards was the correct pick for the MVP I believe also. However Calgary terribly outplayed Tampa in game 6, especially periods 3 and the first OT. But that's hockey a bad clear or bad pass and you're down to a team you've had on their heels. Last night game 7 was unbelievable to watch the last 10 minutes of the game. Calgary was playing desperate hockey and really kept the pressure on TB. It almost looked like a power play.

I also got to say I really appreciate CBC for televising the games. They do a super job compared to ESPN/ABC. they know the game and provide insight you won't/can't get from ESPN. I started watching them during the Flames/Wings series. I was hooked when they showed replays of Brett Hull standing at the blue line avoiding contact with Flames players. The announcers asked "Is this this guys best game he can bring? If so the Wings are in trouble." I've long thought Hull while a great shot and sniper, was not a complete hockey player and should be held to power play use only. They also called out a number of other Wings who had nothing to bring. I wish those announcers had a say in who stays and who is out in Motown next season.

Now we all have to hold our breath over the Summer to see what transpires for next Fall.

Congrats Tampa, You deserve the Holy Grail of Hockey.

I was in Richmond B.C. for game 5 & 6. Amazing how many prople cheer agains the Flames (regarless of the opposing team). I think true hockey fans recover from the loss of their favorite team fairly quickly & appreciate the efforts of all involved, especially the winners.
