Is it a big job to change the ignition (key) assembly in the column. I want to replace the unit. My key is wafer thin and I just know it will break one day. I want to replace all the locks for that matter as keys don't match. So if I pull off the wheel is it a simple job or should I take to a pro? Special tools required? Asking for trouble?

Its not that hard if you can do some work on your car. the hardest part is finding out what to push on to get it to release from the column. Get a book that has the steps.I have a couple of magizine articles about rebuilding columns I use. And be carefull not to break the little key buzzer switch when you are trying to push the spot with a small screwdriver to release the switch.

The cylinder removal process is described in detail with photos in the "Steering" section of the '69 Chassis Service Manual; there's only ONE way to do it.
:beers:

You have to remove a little piece of aluminum flash to get to the place to "push" to release. JohnZ is right, the service manual is invaluable. I can photocopy and mail you the pages if you don't have the book.

Then put 4 books on your wish list. The Chasis Service manual, the Chassis repair manual, the Fisher Body manual, and the Assembly Instruction Manual.

I got mine on ebay by looking under impala. It's the same manual for all models, except Corvette, I think, but if you find it under Camaro, you will pay more!!!
