: 350 Engine Identification
Speedy69 Dec 30th, 05, 04:33 PM Hi To All,
I recently picked up a complete 350 engine from a friend and I am trying to check what I have. It is a 350 4-bolt main 3970010 block, 333882 heads, 3932442 crank, and an Edelbrock performer intake. It supposedly has about 5,000 miles, and I heard it run briefly before it was pulled and it ran pretty smooth so it probably has a stock type cam. It has the number 1738 cast into the side of the pistons viewed from underneath. Any idea what the pistons are? Could this be a decent budget street motor for my '69 Camaro with a cam swap? Any help would be appreciated!!!

those are fairly common 350 parts, you need the casting dates and suffixes to narrow things down, all in all a good place to start.
pdq67 Dec 30th, 05, 07:16 PM Post back the letters at the end of the VIN number string that should be on a little deck pad right above the pass. side top water pump bolt and we can probably tell you what it started life as if it isn't still a virgin motor.

Speedy69 Jan 1st, 06, 07:08 PM Thanks for the replys. I found out the motor is a from a 1974 Truck. Any idea what the 1738 number cast into the pistons means? Also, what cam suggestions do you have to make this motor sound more aggressive (lumpy idle) and more powerful using the existing engine setup. I would like to drop it in my budget '69 Camaro, which currently has a 6-cylinder, turbo 350 trans, 3.08 rear end. Thanks for the help!!!
pdq67 Jan 1st, 06, 07:16 PM You want cackle so here it is AND it is still a schosh too big at your poor CR!!
Try a Crane 274H06!
But an Isky 262 Supercam will do you a heck of a lot better as for power production.
As always, jmho.

Speedy69 Jan 1st, 06, 07:30 PM Thanks pdq67, I realize this engine is not anything special, but the price was right (free) and it has to be better than the current 250! Can these cams swap in with minimal changes (cam, lifters, etc.)? Will the 274HO6 sound good, but run slow vs. the Isky? Sorry for all the questions, but this board has always been a big help to me!!!
pdq67 Jan 1st, 06, 08:18 PM You will be down on CR. with the 274H06, that's why I mentioned the 262 Isky b/c it will be a lot better cam for you,. imho..
The Isky should still have a hint of a cackle tho b/c of being on 108 centers!
AND it should be powerful in your motor...........
