im about ready to paint my firewall and underbody of my 69', the question i have is what color ? are they both the same color and if so how can i get it,
how do i get the correct shade? the area of the dash is black also but it looks like a flatter color. the car is daytona yellow, yellow houndstooth and black vinyl top w/black stripes. its a frame off resto.

The firewall should be 30% black. The dash is a soft semi wrinkle type paint that is available through Ricks First generation.

Use Rustoleum 7777 you'll be very pleased.
Corvette restorers have been using it for years.

PPG offers a recipe page to mix their paints to different gloss levels. I have used this to mix acrylic enamel to match the gloss levels as stated in Jerry McNiesh's 69 Z/28 Camaro book. I also mixed some white in with the firewall and bottom paint to lighten it up a little.

SS502 and I are exhanging similar info on the Topic: engine compartment paint, in this same forum if you want to take a look. I'm doing the same car I drove as a kid, a 68 SS/RS Camaro convertible BB with 4speed and I want to get the paint factory correct.

Your info is a great help. The white mix in the paint is one I will try out. I always thought the firewall got a different higher gloss (say 50%) than the rest of the body bottom.

Also I have 1983 NOS GM inner front fenderwells and 1983 NOS GM front clip, firewall top panels and rear quarters. The fenderwells look like 60%-70% gloss while the black primed body panels have a really pronounced sheen like 50% other than the grey primed ones which are dull primer. I scraped off the undercoat on the rear wheelhouses and the black there looks like the new panels. Any clue on why this is? Is the new stuff a later ecoat process?

Also I just looked at the dash top and it is a very different black low lustre finish, is this the "semi wrinkle" you mentioned wacky174?

This is very different than the dash face itself which seems to be 50%-60%?? gloss. Is this a special lacquer like on the console?

Thanks

Sorry for confusion but when I say a 1983 clip etc I mean I bought all the parts for the 1968 car from GM is 1983 so they are old stock.
