can anyone help? i am trying to find out how my car came out of the manufacture... it's a 1978 Z-28, 350ci, typical z car... anyways i bought it 10 years ago never really thought much of it or what was powering it, just used a transportation, untill a year ago when i started rebuilding it.... went to rebuild trans and found out had a th400 instead of 350, and 4.10 posi out back... all documentation states chevy stopped putting those in camaros after the early 70's. i have talk to all previous owners (2) and none of them installed either item... asked guy who bought it new if remembers option list said no. talk to local chevy dealer they said no camaros came out with either in '78... called and wrote gm, when i called they had no clue about car and have not recieved letter back after writing them...
My question is after all that is this.... how do i find out what driveline was off the assembly line? Do I have a "ONE OFF" car here or what? Please someone direct me in the right direction... have been searching for a year....thanx...you can also email me at bugzweiser@aol.com...

Check the date codes on the trans and rear and that will give you a clue as to when they were manufactured. You will probably find the trans doesn't match the car. As for the 4:11's thats just a gear change. Get the codes off the front of the pass. side axle tube and post them. That code will tell you what gear ratio was originally installed.

Nope, neither came in your car but both are easy swaps. Looks like someone before you built themselves a real performance car out of one of the lo po Z28s from that era. Hows the engine? Original?

thanx for the replys but as stated in prior post, according to both prior owners, niether of them installed items.... talk to both of them personally... the engine is original with 80,000 miles on it (350ci)...

If you want to get to the bottom of this, you need to post the codes off of the trans and rearend.

Either the two previous owners are suffering memory loss, or there was another owner you don't know about that did the swaps. Post the codes as mentioned and you will find out where these items came from originally.
