I have the rear axle out of the car during my chassis/suspension redo. I want to add the extra spring perch support to the rear axle as recommended by David Pozzi's site. My question is: do you just add a piece of metal and what gauge to the front and the back of the perch to the axle. What gauge?? And does the axle weld OK with a standard small MIG welder? Any thing to look out for or is this straight forward? I have the multi 5 leaf perch. 68 BB 396, new springs from Eaton Springs
thanks

I used 3/16" thick steel, I think it was 2" wide, whatever fits. I used a mig and it welded fine, just get the metal clean where you weld.

1/8" or 3/16" thick will do nicely.
I didn't do this, but I think my car had it done to it while it was away from me??
I did however, add "U-Bolts" tho before it got away from me.

Keep the ground lead as close to your work as possible !
If your rear is assembled or has the bearings in it... do as said above.
If it's an empty housing, it doesn't matter.
The arc can jump bearings causing damage/failure.

Thanks for the replies,
Always better to ask before doing if I'm in doubt about something,
Sounds like my best practice is:
Use 3/16 metal
Use U bolts ( I was planning on using all U bolts, mine had 1 u-bolt and 1 t bolt in each side)
Keep ground as close to work as possible ( my gears are in, ) This one would have never occured to me.
Thanks Doug G, Pdq67 and DavidPozzi , you guys have answered questions for me many times.
