Your engine assembly date(V1219- December 19th) is close to the build date of the car(01B-2nd week january)...Some partial vin stampings are up on the engine pad, some are down by the oil filter..It'll most likely be down by the oil filter, but it is difficult to see sometimes with the engine in the car..I bet it's down by the oil filter..

Everything looks really good, you can still see the broach marks on the block. Is there a 1 for the first digit before the 9 on the VIN by the oil filter, looks like there is. The rear end assemly date is extremely close to the body build date. Good luck on your purchase.

I'm not convinced.
Tag is OK.
There are some things I don't like about the pad, but it's too fuzzy to be sure.
What's the axle code? BUxx15G?

KURT S and Mark C Could you give me your opinion on the oil filter stamping? the block casting numbers are 3932386 date I 6 8. Yes there is a 1 before the 9 on the stamping.looked at other stampings in the camaro books.but they seem to be lighter and spread apart more, need your input on this. have you seen this style of factory stampings,on other 69s down by the oil filter???? //// thanks big john again thanks for your help////

Hard to tell from the photo, but the engine stamps usually have a larger spacing between the letters than what you picture shows. Fonts do look right for that time period. Do you have a photo of the Transmission stamp? It was done with the same stamp in the factory so they should be identical.

Here are the updated pics of John's potential purchase...I am no expert but the pad and the broach marks don't look right to me..I also see a "v" in between the 1 and the 2 on the pad ...

I dont like the looks of the Partial VIN on the engine or the pad stamping. The transmission has been restamped also to a 1968 model year transmission. Something fishy here!!!

I say everything looks restamped.

The transmission has had the 9 stamped over with an 8. Some moron though that since the transmission should have been made in December of 68 it should have an 8 in the stamp for 1968, but the trans stamps are based on model year not calendar year. The transmission is definately a December 11th 1968 built M21 for a 69 model year car, since Muncie didn't start adding the A, B, C suffix until mid October of 68.

Other than that, it looks like the same stamp did both VIN stamps on the engine and transmission. I do beleive the pad has been restamped though the stamp is to far to the left on the pad. I too can see a V under the current stamp betwwen the 1 and the 2 of the existing stamp, but if you make the picture a negative image and play with the contrast and brightness I think I can see peices of a D and Z on either side of that triangular gouge in the pad.

Seems to me that that VIN on the side of the block is too good, almost too clear!
I might agree with you on the DZ suggestions offered here!
So Many DZ's made, been a while for me to be certain.
Need to go by my friends place and get a shot of his from a Z I sold him years ago.
Might be of some benefit!

Every stamp has some issues. :(

There's the chance that the block and trans may be the originals, but if they are, someone killed the value by restamping the pad and mucking up the trans.

Stampings appear to be too nice , clean and fresh for over thirty time frame.
