I recently pulled up the trunk mat in my '67 and noticed some orange stains under it on the spatter paint. This is, of course, surface rust that must have been caused by some moisture accumulating under the mat. It's not bad at all, just surface stuff.

How would you guys go about repairing this? I assume that the right thing to do is strip out all of the spatter, lay down a coat or two of POR15 and then repaint the spatter. But do I really need to do all of that?

Also, is there a difference between spatter paints? In the catalogs that I have some offer the paint for $7.00 a can and some are as high as $11.00 a can. Some also recommend a clear overspray, while others do not. What are your experiences with the various brands? I don't have the setup to spray Zolotone but I could have it done at a body shop if that is the recommendation.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Scott.

Your're right about stripping off the surface rust, and putting down some por-15, as that will prevent more rusting, and act as a base that you can paint over. I used it on the floors and trunk, great stuff. * On a side note, wear groves when putting on por-15,it don't come off after it dries. AND YOU WILL WEAR IT. http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

Just a warning, most spatter paints are "water based" meaning if there is a miniscule spot of bare metal or a thin coating for a top layer it will get those orange stains. The trunk floor needs many layers of protection before spatter painting to increase the length of time before ever having to do it again. Camaro's are known for having water setting in the trunk from leaking windows or gaskets and need to be protected.

Thanks for all the help. It looks like I'll start this project over the long weekend.

Does anyone have an opinion on the various brands of paint? I was going to order from D and R because they were the cheapest but if anyone has any first hand experience could you please share?

Scott.
