View Full Version : AFR 195/Cam Choice?
MTidwell Jan 16th, 06, 10:13 AM Currently have a set on Cast Iron 340292s (64cc, Angle Plug) and a XE262 (218/224 @ .050 duration, .308/.313 Lift). I do run a set of 1.6RR on these heads and plan to keep them for the new heads.
Going to a set of Air Flow Research 195s. Other parts include RPM manifold, perfomer 600 cfm, HEI, 350 block. Compression is about 9.5:1 - 10:1.
My question is would I see much of a difference if I went w/ a XE268 (224/230, .318/.32) with these set of heads? Want more HP (don't we all) but still want it to run well on the highways.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Eric68 Jan 16th, 06, 12:32 PM Have you considered the AFR 180's ? With smaller cam sizes and your 350 engine you might like the 180's better.
You might go faster with a little more cam, but your compression ratio is a little on the low side for anything much bigger than the XE268. IMO
It would be a good idea to figure out exactly what your compression ratio is now -- or at least measure your cylinder pressure with a gauge before deciding on a cam.
Straight-line-69 Jan 16th, 06, 01:18 PM Big Eric has a point, but I'm starting to like the small cam/big head idea. It makes for smooth torque and fun HP. The other way around usually creates a lot of disappointment.
My opinion,..worth what you've paid.
zdld17 Jan 16th, 06, 06:11 PM Running Xr282Hr in my mule motor with same comp and AFR 195's , Combo may be a little big now for the motor but is does run well , Building a stroker shortblock to take all spare parts off of mule motor. 306 in a bag.
Larger Dave Jan 18th, 06, 09:08 AM I do appreciate some one looking at a reasonable choice for a cam instead of bottom of the page.
That said, I favor the XE268H also, as it will allow for future growth (we all know that we are never satisfied). The larger AFR heads have the benefit of still keeping air velocities up in a 350 while having the capacity to feed a 383 on the next rebuild. If this is the final iteration for this car then the XE262H and AFR's 185 CNC heads would be it.

Straight-line-69 Jan 18th, 06, 09:54 AM Actually, 195 isn't that big,..they make a 220 which needs rpm to work. I'm running AFR 195's with Comp 270H on a 406, and I couldn't be happier,..tons of torque and power all the way up to 6000 with a M-21 and 3.73's out back. 1-5/8's headers, RPM dual plane, and a q-jet.
Very fun to drive!
69pacecar Jan 21st, 06, 11:21 PM im running the comp xe274w 1.6 rockers and trick flow 195 cnc'd heads on a 10.3cr 355. it pulls hard to about 6200, your heads should make more power than mine. ive run a 12.86 with a 2800stall in a 700r, it didnt effect power brakes either, if you have the money go with a hyd. roller
