View Full Version : Where can I take my car to get done right!?
no69x-44 Jan 16th, 06, 09:52 PM Right now my '69 has no front clip on it, no motor, no tranny and I have been in sort of a stall patteren on the resto for quiet a while. About a year ago or so I thought I had some one from PA lined up to take my car do the sheet metal repairs that it needed and media blast it. They came to my house, said that wanted the job and would get me an estimate. That never paned out as I never heard back, even after several attempts to contact them. So now I'm stuck again it's been frustrating to say the least. Most of this work I'm sure I can do myself as I'm in the process of retoring a '68 Chevelle with my son, but this is sort of a special Camaro and I want to get the all the sheet metal work i.e. tulip panels, floor pans sections, etc. done professionally while perserving as much of the orginal metal as humanly possiable.
I'm looking for a quaified classic car restoration professional who takes pride in their work, to take my car and do the work on it that it needs and bring it on back to me. I have a trailer, so I can even tow it if necessary. Bottom line is that this car deserves more than a just a backyard make over and I don't want to turn it over to just anybody. I'm sick just seeing sitting my garage up on jack stands. Can anyone please help me out here ... I would like to actually drive this car again someday.
Thanks in advance for any help/advise.
Eric Kammerer Jan 16th, 06, 10:46 PM Not sure where you are in NJ, and I'm sure the Jersey Posse boys will check in, but...
Bill Wood (69-Z11pacer) does excellent work on 1st gens (and I'm sure all the others as well), and he's a fairly short ride away in Kutztown, PA.

Eric - I'm in south central NJ. Do you know if Bill is still around ... Doing this work? He's the guy that I thought was going to take my car before. He was at my house and looked over the car. He seemed like a great guy and I was very comfortable with taking my car. At the time he told me that he would like to have this job and would get back to me with an estimate, but he just sort of blew me off  . I have since talk to a couple of places, but I either didn't think the work they did was what I would be happy with or I just wasn't comfortable with them.
Thanks.
1969 RS/SS DROPTOP Jan 17th, 06, 08:03 AM no-69x-44 in the bodyshop/restoration business you will find that there are many guys that can "talk the talk" but can't "walk the walk" if you know what im saying, to fully restore a car from the ground up requires many hours of hard labor and many dollars as ive been through it and im about to do it again. Its worth taking your time to find someone reputable and willing to do the work. Myself i take my cars over 750 miles away to get the work done however im ok with it as ive known these guys for over 20 yrs and feel very comfortable leaving my car/cars with them.
TJS69 Jan 17th, 06, 09:02 AM How about directly with Goodmark ? Their prices seem reasonable.

Hi Guys-
Eric, Thanks for the referral, and vote of confidence. I do take alot of pride in my work and it's nice that it's recognized.
Rob, I'm sorry we lost touch. I am definately still around, and pretty busy. When we talked (over a year ago) things were pretty hectic in my personal life. I had an ill family member and she had to come first over the cars. If you took that as 'blowing you off' then I truly appologize. I am building a new shop (should be done in April). It will be 6000 sqft+ and I'll have more room for stuff then. Good luck on your search for a shop, and keep in mind I'd still be willing to do your car, or offer my advice on another shop that you've found. Hope all is well.

Bill -- No malice intended and I apologize if such was taken. By all means I certianly understand that family always comes first, I would have been the first to tell that if I had known. That is way it should be, no questions asked. I guess I assumed that when we lost contact you either no longer did this work or lost intrest in working on my car. My bad there, I guess ...
Fact is, would I still like you to do my car. I admired your passion and honesty back when we first met and have held all others that have talk to about doing work on my car to that same standard. Needless to say they have fallen short and the car still sits in my garage.
I'm willing to say let's start over on this one. Are you around today, in shop? Let me know I'll give you a call. I would like to get this open up again. Thanks.
69-Z11Pacer Jan 17th, 06, 12:00 PM Rob -
No offense taken / no hard feelings. We can take the rest of this conversation off-line to discuss your car. I am pretty booked until April / May. I am not in the shop today. Call me on my cell phone ( I sent it to you in a PM ).
Bill
KevinW Jan 17th, 06, 12:45 PM Bill, glad you and Rob are going to be moving forward on his car, it really deserves the resto. I called and left a vm on your cell with my phone number to discuss the RS soleniod parts I am making. Later
no69x-44 Jan 17th, 06, 01:07 PM Kevin -- Yes, Bill and I hooked up today on the phone and it looks like this saga just might have a happy ending after all :hurray: . We are going to try and get together next weekend and see if we can't move forward on this project. I'm looking forward to it.
KevinW Jan 17th, 06, 03:41 PM Talked to Bill too. Good luck on the resto! Time, sweat and money, that is all a Camaro really needs :D

ad.powell Apr 1st, 06, 06:55 PM take the car to cleveland,ga. to the goodmark install center. the car can be completely rebuilt with new metal to g.m. specs. and then go to a finish shop. moderate to high dollar restoration. if you want it done right be prepared to pay. goodmark will be adding shops in the future in other areas of the u.s. good luck on making the right choice.

6d7 rs Apr 2nd, 06, 08:43 AM Im glad to see that im not the only one with a car sitting in the garage waiting to be done , However im alot closer to finished , can anybody give some info or direction to this problem . The car has all new metal , in prime and color jambed , the shop that i had it at did very nice work , i took the car back in this condition so i could set my drivetrain and than it was to go back to be finished , what i need is someone (good ) to do some final panel alignment , block the car and paint , since getting the car back the shop has closed up and the owner said they will no longer be doing resto work. Im so close i sometimes pull the car out of the garage just to hear it run and see it in the sunshine , im in monmouth county new jersey , ill put the car on a trailer and bring to you . If there is anyone who knows of someone good please respond .
Barefoot Dave Apr 3rd, 06, 12:16 PM Hi guys:
I was able to speak to Bill today. He asked me to pass along that he is alive and well and will be returning to the Camaro business in the near future. Some of life's obstacles have gotten in his way but he sounds happy and the future is definitely looking brighter!
BonzoHansen Apr 3rd, 06, 01:03 PM I posted this in another link a while back. Some opinions on NJ area shops.
