: Mono to Multi Leaf Conversion ?

Have any of you had any problems installing the rear shocks after a multi leaf conversion? I'm having a problem with the angle of the rear shocks not lining up with the Anchor plate hole at the bottom. As it is, the shock body rubs on the rear axle, not allowing the shock bolt to be inserted at the correct angle. Should I modify the Anchor plate or perhaps use a thinner shock? Did any of you have to modify the shock towers to get the proper angle? Thanks in advance.

Did you change to the multi leaf shock plate? They are quite different than the mono ones.

Thanks Greg O, Yes I did. I bought the conversion kit with the leaf springs.

I haven't started my conversion yet but I was under the impression you had to buy new shocks specifically for multi-leaf. They attach differently I think.

Winch, When I ordered the shocks for the rears, I ordered the 68 rear multi leaf shocks thinking they would slide right in. I am thinking that my problem is with the shocks themselves. They are the KYB Gas-a-just kind, that have a wider body to them. My dilemma is that I used the KYB's on my front end and would like to have them all around front and rear. I was hoping that maybe someone else might have run into that same problem and came up with a solution.

Dave, I am not sure what you got into.

Is this the 3 leaf Hotckis rear leaf springs? You said you got new spring perches? Where did you get them from?

Thanks CFunk, I have the 5-leaf system on the rear. I bought the conversion kit from Classic Industries. It came with the leafs, two anchor plates, all the hardware and the waffles. Everything went together fine, except for the shocks. The passenger side shock seems to line up ok, it's the driver's side that has the problem.

When I converted my ‘67 to multi leafs I purchased a reproduction RH shock plate for a 68-69 multi leaf car. I then had a metal shop fabricate a LH shock plate using the RH shock plate as a pattern.

The two bottom pictures are of my "custom made" 1967 LH shock plate installed on my car.

The passenger side shock seems to line up ok, it's the driver's side that has the problem. Both shocks have to mount in front of the axle on a '67.

I converted mine and had to buy new shock plates and order shocks for a multi leaf car. All went together fine.

I recently converted a 69 multi to mono, the right monoplate is the same for 67-69 and the left is either 67 only or 68-69 and I used the same shocks and it worked fine.

Bingo!!! Thank you Farm Boy. A picture is worth a thousand words. When I bought the conversion kit, I asked about there being a right side and left side Anchor plate. They told me that there was only one made and that it works on both sides. On the 68 multi leaf cars, there was only one made. When you install them, the holes for the shock faces the front, while the other faces the rear thus creating the staggered set up. Apparently the conversion kit is flawed. What they won't tell you is that the kits are made for 68 and 69 Camaros. Also the shock towers are different on the 67's.The 68 and 69 Camaro shock towers must be different to accommodate the difference in the angle of the shock. The bottom line is that when they tell you that there is a conversion kit for the 67 Mono to Multi leaf applications, it is not true, at least without modifying the Anchor plates.

Thank you for all the replies and help!!!

I did this along time ago using the springs and rear end from a 74 Nova SS that I parted out. I don't remember having any problems other than getting some shock extenders. I'm sure I used the mono spring lower plates. The shocks were some ancient Monro-matics which are still on the car. These springs are way stiff.

Detroit Speed now offers the L & R multi-leaf brackets for a '67. I bought them, but am waiting on the springs before I can install.
