View Full Version : LS1 Exhaust
jrhbb Jan 18th, 06, 08:34 PM I'm looking at buying a 2000 Trans Am 6speed and was wandering what the best complete exhaust system is for the money. I don't want to start hacking away any sheet metal so fitment IS an issue. One other question is this. If I were to eleminate the CAT, would this have any effect on the cars computer? If so. What can be done to tend to this problem? I'm not good AT ALL with computer controled cars so bare with me.

67SS&99SS Jan 20th, 06, 10:20 PM Long tube headers, 1 3/4" primaries. QTP has lowered the price on their high velocity merge collector headers from $1,325 to $725. This is the best ls1 header on the market, and it is in polished stainless steel. A true dual exhaust is also nice. Stay away from a catback if you can. Sweet thunder chambered mufflers sound incredible on 6 speed cars as well as single chamber flows like whats on my 99 SS. If you remove the cats, you can run o2 sims in place of the rear oxygen sensors, or you can have your car dyno tuned at a ls1 shop and they can remove the codes for the rear oxygen sensors completely. Here are a few sound clips. http://www.ls1sounds.com/true_duals/TDs-SweetThunder_PaceSetterLT_2.5inX_S2heads_TR224-114cam.wmv

richardls1 Mar 13th, 06, 07:28 PM what kind of gain will i get with true duals
77TypeLT Mar 13th, 06, 10:49 PM True duals is a big debate on fourth gen cars. Due to the undercarriage, theres is not much room for mufflers and most people dump the exhaust before the axle. A few run it out back, and theres a few different ways to do this... a search on ls1tech.com should show you what others have done.
IMO, unless its a race car or you are dying to be unique, I'd just run a catback. A 3 inch catback will flow plenty well. On a bolt on car the true duals will be worth a minimal gain if anything. There are plenty of people out there making over 400rwhp through single 3" exhausts. The most popular brands out there are Borla, Hooker and Magnaflow.
I'd really suggest checking out LS1tech.com. There is a wealth of informatioin over there as well as "FAQs" in each section which help to answer commonly asked questions.
67SS&99SS Mar 14th, 06, 05:43 AM You will gain about 15 hp with true duals over a catback on most cars. They flow a lot better than the catbacks, and the sound is much better. You can buy a prefabricated 3" true dual setup from Texas Speed with your choice of bullet, moroso spiral flows, or sweet thunder chambered mufflers. The true dual setup is around the same price as most of the catbacks. It retails for $410. Go to the external engine section on ls1tech.com with all of your questions. You should be able to search the forum and answer all of your questions within 30 minutes. Hope this helps.
richardls1 Mar 14th, 06, 06:56 PM thanks for the info. I took the car this morning put the o2 simulators @ headers dual 2.5 with the x pipe and dynomax bullet muffler on each end before the rear differential got a real nice sound its a whole new car just with the sound not to say the power felt what a change from the y with flowmaster and stock manifolds. feels very strong I cant wait to try it at the track on friday any idea on what it will run 1/4 mile any advice will help i was also told to change spark plugs to ngk tr55 are these plugs as good as they say.
67SS&99SS Mar 14th, 06, 10:05 PM Good job! Glad you decided to go with true duals. Since your car is a 6 speed, your times may not be as consistent as an automatic. Several of my friends with 6 speeds were running 12.9-13.1s with duals. Do you powershift your car? This usually knocks .2 tenths off the time, but it is very hard on the transmission. Does your car have any more modifications, lid, underdrive pulley, ls6 or fast intake, ect.....? If it does, that can alter your times for the better:D
