Could someone with an original crank pulley please measure the distance from the back of the pulley where it bolts on to the balancer to mid point ( half way) of the first groove ( the one closest to the balancer)? Thanks

Sounds like you have a repro one and are finding out that your belt does not line up, right? Are the other pulleys repro or orig?

RIGHT! The other pullies are repo and line up perfectly with the stock 350 non deep grove crank pulley, the repo deep grove pulley is about 1/4" or half a belt width out too far. I just want to verify the correct distance of the factory 302 one.

My original looks to be about 1-7/8" from the mounting face to the center of the rearward belt groove.

Thanks John. The stock 350 non deep grove pulley I have lines up perfectly with the repop deep grove pullies I have, my repop deep grove crank pully mesures about the same as your stock one and is about 3/16-1/4" further out than the non deep grove stock 350 pulley. The factory 8" balancer on the 302 must be slightly different by that 3/16-1/4". The 350 non deep grove mesures 1 3/4" while the deep grove 302 repop mesures between 1 7/8 -1 15/16. Your comments would be appreciated for the record.
Thanks
Maurice

I had the same problem with the repro pulley. Its way off. When my 2nd 302 arrived it had an original and when I installed that on car #1 everything lined up. Drove me nuts! You would think they could stamp the right size. Thats why the GM ones are going for $250 plus. Hope they correct this by the time I need to setup the second car. So bottom line its the repro pulley.

If your crank pulley measures 1-7/8" and you have the correct balancer and water pump, alternator and A.I.R. pump pulleys, it should all line up correctly.
:beers:

Are you sure your balancer is pressed on all the way?

Yes the balancer is pressed on all the way. The non deep grove pulley lines up perfectly, I am sure the problem is with the deep grove pulley as posted earlier. John Z.. the repo pulley mesures closer to 1 15/16 while the stock one mesures closer to 1 3/4 which is only 1/8 off your mesurement which could be due to us eyeballing the mesurement.

Just to follow up in case someone is following this post in the future. The repop deep grove crank pulley that classic sells is 3/16 of an inch too long which when installed on the car looks about 1/2 of a pulley width. I machined the balancer where it contacts the lower timeing gear pulley and removed 3/16 " now everything lines up perfectly. It was not an original 8" 302 balancer so I didn't feel bad about machineing it. For someone with an original balancer looking for a deep grove crank pulley I'm afraid you are going to have to dig deep and find a GM one. Everyone else the machine trick works great.

Just saw this post in a search. I have run into the same crank pulley problem with one I purchased from Ground Up. I bought the whole 69 Z-28 deep groove pulley set for my 350, thinking all would bolt on and line up properly. The crank pulley was much deeper than the old non dg pulley I was using. Had to reuse my old non-dg pulley with the newer dg alternator, water pump and power steering pulleys to get things back lined up.

Now my problem is what or where to get a deep groove crank pulley that is the right dimension.

Am I wrong to think that the Z-28 deep groove pulleys should be a direct bolt on to a 350 motor? I see in the CRG website that there are two different sets of part numbers for the Z-28 and the 350, although it is my understanding that all 69 pulleys were deep groove. Ineed help please.

Only the solid-lifter engines used the deep-groove pulleys.
