Hey guys, I'm on this poker kick lately and a few of the guys and I got together last night ran into a problem.
There was 2 guys left in the tournament and the blinds were $800/$1600...The person who had the small blind did not have enough to post the small blind...IMO I said that person should of gone all in on the last hand, because he didn't have enough for the blind and the game was over.
The guy with the small blind argued that tournament rules(?) say he goes all in on the next game(with $650...he is short $150) not fair if he wins the hand. Who is right?....We are making house rules from now on.
Any of you guys have home tournaments?

he does not have to go all in on the last hand, that was up to him...now since he is the small blind on this hand he would put in his $650..and you would take $650 from everyone that is in the hand and make a side pot...this side pot is all he can win...hope that helps..

The player was right. It's no different than going all in from any other position when it comes down to it. Take for example, the player is Under the gun (position just to the left of the big blind) and he doesn't have enough to call the big blind. He can still push all his chips into the pot to from that position. If noone else but the person in small blind calls the big blind, when the action passes around to the player in the big blind (if he checks and does not raise), any chips in excess of the amount that the player under the gun bet are put into a side pot. The player under the gun is only entitled to the chips in the main pot and the two players from the blinds will be playing for the side pot.

In your example, if the player in the small blind can't call the big blind but he is still all in. Any remaining chips in excess of his all in are either put into a side pot or simply awarded back to the player in the big blind if noone else is in the hand.
