I have 14x6 rallys, and I discovered today that my outer tie rods are rubbing the sidewalls when the wheels are turned. It doesn't happen until the wheels are almost to lock, but there are grooves in each of the tires. I have 205/70 14s on all four wheels. The rally codes are XN, XB, and XG (kind of a missmosh of rallys apparently). Anyway, I am about to mount 15x7 rallys with 4.25 backspace, and now I am afraid that they won't fit. Will they work?

What is the backspacing on the 14x6's?

I'll go out on a limb and tell you they will fit.
Or at least they fit on mine, my first set was 15x7, w/ 215/65 tires.
From what I recall reading, 15's will rub the rim on the tie rod end , not the rubber, if they are too big, and a 7 is not too big.

Jim, so would that mean that a 16" rim will not rub on the tie rod end?

Do have drums or disks up front? I had the same setup on my 68 when I bought it, 205/70 on 14x6 rallys. With the drum brakes, the tie rod ends gouged the sidewall pretty bad (I guess I must have driven her harder than the PO). I put on a thin spacer, and it was fine. When I went to disc brakes, the problem went away because the additional offset of the rotor (1/4 or so outboard) acted like the spacer.

The recommended rim width for a 205/70/14 is 5.0 to 7.5 inches. On a 6 inch wheel, it bulges the sidewall pretty good. So, if you go 15 x 7 with correct backspace for whichever brake setup you have, and you choose a tire that fits you should be fine. In other words, the 15x7 with a 205 may actually fit better, if the backspace is the same, because even though the rim is a little wider, the tire sits more square on it.

Thanks Eric. I have drums all around. I'm going to try the 15x7 rallys with 205 tires up front. Where did you find spacers? I can't seem to find them anywhere.

I just got them at PepBoys, but that was in 1995. It's possible that they (and others) don't carry them any more.
