I'm putting a 68 Camaro back together and had a set of NOS fenders put on at the body shop. Now it is time to put the "Camaro" script and the "327" emblems on the car, and I need to drill holes! I have an assembly manual, but I can't make heads or tails of the dimensions provided for these fender emblems.

I looked at two different cars around town and the scripts are located in very different places, leaving me to not trust either car. Can anyone provide me a good resource, provide dimensions, and/or give me any other tips for putting these on correctly? I do have new barrel nuts that will allow me to push them in from the front side, without removing the fenders. I know there are mixed reviews on this approach, but I going to take that route versus removing the fenders!

Much thanks for any help!

First, Welcome to this great site. Second, you have a great model year Camaro. :D Regarding your emblem location question, there is an emblem location template sold by many Camaro parts suppliers. It helps a lot, but you have to verify some markings on it, prior to drilling. To get lots of fast help, about this and other topics, use the search option, it can save you some time instead of waiting for replies related to widely discused topics. Good Luck...

Line 20 in the assembly manual is 1 7/16" above the peak in the fender and the vertical line 0 is the face of the firewall. It is tricky to transfer this line to the outside surface of the fender. It should be the same point as the fender flange that bolts to the firewall. For the money you're better off buying the template. Good Luck.

I bought the RS backup light template kit from Camaro Templates and was most pleased with their product. They also sell templates for emblems, antenna locations, etc. Check out the following website:

I had your same question about installing my emblems. Check out this thread (http://www.camaros.net/forum/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=004414#000000) . I ordered a template from Year One and it was exact for the SS fender emblems but was way off on all the other ones. I used the template to get a location but that was all. I cut a cereal box into pieces with square edges, stuck the emblem pegs through the cardboard to get the right hole locations and then lined up the cardboard pieces according to the lines on the template. Remarkably, they turned out straight. All it takes is a lot of patients and a little courage to cut that first hole in a pretty new fender.

By the way, I used the barrel nuts for the SS and Camaro emblems at the back of the front fenders. The posts I read said that some people had problems getting a tight fit of the emblem against the fender. After trying unsuccessfully for an hour to get the fender loosened up enough to reach my arm up inside the fender to thread the self-tapping nuts on, I gave up and decided to use the barrel nuts. They worked perfectly - the emblems fit tightly to the body.

I am having a hard time getting my arm up behind the fender to put the nuts on the back. I have the two bottom bolts off and two in the wheelwell, but I still can't get to them. Where can you buy the barrel nuts at?

Thanks,
Brian

hey mike,

hows it going. long time since i heard from you. anyway, if i may add to this topic, i went with the self tapping nuts from the back side. i had to unbolt the bottom two bolts along with half of the wheel well bolts. i also used the 2 x 4 approach to wedge the fender away from the chasis. i have avg size arms and it was cold that night that i did the emblems so i put on a jacket but then i couldnt get my arm in through the back. so off with the jacket and reach up to try and screw the nuts in. this is another problem i ran into. i screwed the nuts to the studs prior to going in through the back to "cut in" the threads but it still is pretty difficult to screw it in by hand. all i did was get it started and when i reached up there to screw it in with a socket or closed box, i prayed that i didnt knock the nut off. so, good luck and have band aids ready for the scratches the you will get on your arms.

oh, i had also used the push in barrel nuts but i like the fit of the self tapping nuts better.

Hey Angel, How was your trip? Hope you got some much need R & R... I agree that the nuts are the best way, but the barrel nuts are a good alternative... Angel BTW If you email a fax #, I'll send you some carshows coming up in the area, There's one tomorrow near Costco in South City... :D Mike

I used one if those slick ratchet box wrenches from Sears. Well actually, I held the fender out while my skinny painter tightened them. I used some dum-dum on the nuts to help them stay on the posts.
