I put 16x8 92 Z28 wheels on my 68. My dad has a 92 with these same wheels so I took one off and went to the junkyard to find a match. I got what I though was the correct lugs. I put several on my car and they seem to have stripped the lugs. They hand tightened fine but when I put the air wrench to them they just spin. To make matters more complicated when I put my old chrome lugs back on they will tighten fine. The old lugs don't have the proper taper for the Z28 wheels, though. In short which lugs do I need, and please tell me I didn't screw up royally with the lugs.

Well, you didn't screw up royally, but there is an issue. The '92 lug nuts are metric, where your '68 lug nuts are SAE. I have 3rd gen wheels on a first gen and used what is known as a 'bulge-taper' lug nut. They have the 7/16" thread of the first gen, but the taper continues out further.

This extended, or bulge taper allows it to seat within the 3rd gen wheel. They aren't the easiest lug nut to find. A certain speed shop kept telling me they carried them and would have them shipped in from another shop, but they didn't arrive over a 2 week period.

I ended up getting them from a regular auto shop in the McGard line (pricey!). The 'other' shop's price was $1.25 each, not too bad, if they had them.

Bob.

I found what I need on the McGard website. Can you order direct from these guys or do I have to go through a shop? Any chain shops carry them?
