I have a 67 rs ss with 350 4 speed. I recently removed the engine to detail the firewall and engine. After reinstalling the engine I accidently hooked up the battery backwards. After correcting the problem the starter would no longer turn over. All other electrical accessories work fine. The engine wiring harness works good.

All the fusable links are fine. I also noticed there is no power being received on the 2 small terminals on each side of the starter marked S and I.

Can anybody help?

If you hurt nothing else, I really doubt you hurt the starter.

The starter terminal closest to the block (S) is the one that actually "starts" the car. The purple wire connects to it, and there will only be power there when the key is twisted to "START."

If the purple wire is on the wrong terminal, the motor won't crank. The purple wire also passes through the nuetral safety switch on it's way from the key to the starter, problem could be there as well.

The outer terminal (mine is labelled "R") brings 12 volts to the coil when the key is in "START" and has no bearing at all on cranking the engine. The yellow wire goes there.

It sounds like you have a loose connection somewhere. Hooking the battery up wrong will not harm anything. You probably got an arc when you put the Negative to the Positive post, but that shouldn't damage the starter as Jim has stated in the previous post. Hook the battery back up and go over all the wiring with a test light starting with the battery. Then turn on the key and check for power at the R terminal on the solenoid ( the yellow wire side). Then make sure the switch terminal is secure (Purple wire side). If everything checks out okay, the starter should work.
