On installing trim emblems (67 - flags, engine, and camaro emblems) using the factory type barrel furrules, anyone have tips ?

The ferrules either fit loose or tight and the emblems do not sit totally flush aginst the fender. How (loose/tight) should the ferrule fit on the emblem post and how should the ferrule fit be (loose/tight) in the fender holes ?.

I actually snapped a post trying to put on the speed nut. I think the metal is a lot cheaper than in the old days. After arguing with my vendor, I got a new one. Knowing full well it would happen again, I held the base of the posts with a needle nosed vice grips, and gently pre-threaded the speed nuts on. Because I could only go down so far, after inserting the posts through the holes, I slid rubber washers down the posts. Then I screwed down the speed nut. Mine are tight against the sheet metal, to keep them that way, I applied a dab of silicone over the nut to keep it from loosening. I also applied all my emblems before I hung the fenders.
