View Full Version : 1969 L89 Out of 29 year storage....
Bowtie Muscle Jan 30th, 06, 04:52 PM Guys, I think this is an incredible find...tell me what you think.. I recently bought this car. They say there are less than 30 left. Of those, less than 10 that are RS/SS cars!! It's been off the road since 1977 and still retains the orginal block & aluminum heads!! Same owner since 1970..What a find. Hugger Orange 1969 RS/SS L89 Camaro

1969 RS/SS DROPTOP Jan 30th, 06, 05:45 PM Its a cool feeling knowing that their are cars such as this one still out there, ive recently caught wind of a 67 pacecar thats been sitting about the same amount of time, hopefully ill own it soon.
Bowtie Muscle Jan 30th, 06, 05:55 PM It's definitely a rush!!!! Cool storys accompany this vehicle too... The lady I bought it from use to "flag" for her husband when he would street race with other local muscle cars for money......Now that's cool!
Bowtie Muscle Jan 30th, 06, 06:08 PM Ok, here's the engine compartment with the original motor. I hope it all checks out ok.http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/kaniamark/album?.dir=ba56&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/kaniamark/my_photos

guys like you make this website fun!
Westonz28 Jan 30th, 06, 06:28 PM Nice try but the fender is the wrong color in the 6 banger photo. Very nice Camaro.
Bowtie Muscle Jan 30th, 06, 06:29 PM I thought it was funny, but then I realized everybody left :(
Bowtie Muscle Jan 30th, 06, 06:29 PM It was the best 6 banger pic I could find on short notice....
Chuck L Jan 30th, 06, 07:46 PM Bowtie Muscle,
What an awsome find, I and alot of others know that feeling your having and enjoying, I bet you had a ear to ear grin following that flatbed home. Not to rob your thread but I just bought this one site unseen last month and it hadnt seen light in 18 years.. 1 of the very few with the vigilite system (light monitoring system)
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c107/PaceCarNut/th_DSC00629.jpg (http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c107/PaceCarNut/DSC00629.jpg)
Not as rare of a find as yours, but just as exciting for sure.
Have you found any neat little options the car came with??? Please post more....
click Jan 30th, 06, 10:18 PM I can barely make out the RS solenoid on top of the wiper motor, just to the right of that yellow cord... maybe shoot a close up of that wiper motor area.
Single fuel line I see too. Great find :)
nikkisdad Jan 31st, 06, 12:36 AM Super cool find! Did you get any documents, paperwork, or old family photos of it? I have the 69 L89 with 18,640 original miles and am thrilled for you finding a RS car! Keep the pictures and story going, its quite a buzz!
Bowtie Muscle Jan 31st, 06, 04:17 AM Awesome find Chuck..Did you post a thread abouth that car? I'd love to see more pics of it. For me, it doesn't matter if it's a Camaro w/ the 6 cyl. When I see a car like the one you picked up; covered in dust from hibernation, I get excited. But you can imagine, this one was a little more fun knowing it came from the factory w/ aluminum heads...It wasn't cheap either, she knew it was quite rare. The crazy thing is, I wasn't the only person looking at the car. She said some people drove from a couple hours away! Althought she didn't advertise, people knew of a "69 SS in a garage". Everyone was trying to low ball her on the price. Personally, I don't think they knew what the car was. As soon as my friend and I walked up to it and looked inside, there was a set of aluminum heads laying on the front seat!! This should usually peak your interest...
Chuck L Jan 31st, 06, 06:09 AM I totally agree with you, There is always a thrill while in the hunt. Finding these cars to me is like a tresure hunt.
I have really gotten into looking for them the last 3 years though, every town I go to I buy all the local printed newspapers. Plus now alot of people know I collect tese cars so people are calling me when they find something also. alot od the times it just an old car, but hey more eyes you got looking for you, the better.
And here is the link to when I posted about the car,

36j1967 Jan 31st, 06, 08:02 AM OK, I've been sitting here waiting for the good stuff to be told and shown on this find! We're talking a 69 RS/SS L89 with original block and heads, UNBELIEVABLE COOL! Tell us the details.....original owner car, paperwork, vin stamped, Muncie 20 21 22, rear axel ratio? How complete are the components like Dist., carb., intake etc. Details man....this is like waiting for your buddy to come home from a date with a hot chick :)
moneypit Jan 31st, 06, 08:10 AM I am with 36j1967 !!!! Come on man,... details!!! I already lost three hours of sleep last night wondering why I can't find a "find"! More pics!
moneypit Jan 31st, 06, 08:12 AM BTW, looks like Z10rod just came across a Berger Camaro!!! Waiting for details on that one too! Man oh man,...they are still out there!
Bowtie Muscle Jan 31st, 06, 08:21 AM I'll post more pics and go into further details tonight when I get home....
KevinK7 Jan 31st, 06, 08:51 AM OK, I've been sitting here waiting for the good stuff to be told and shown on this find! We're talking a 69 RS/SS L89 with original block and heads, UNBELIEVABLE COOL! What he said :)
...Awsome find ...
Bowtie Muscle Jan 31st, 06, 05:17 PM Ok, the original owner had the car for maybe a year and then sold it to the ladys (who I bought it from) husband. They were in there late teens when they were dating (can you imagine this car in your teens?). She said when he came to pick her up she knew it was time to come outside when her windows would rattle!! He would race the car at the same drag strip he worked at (I actually found time slips 12.9's!!! Also, she said, on several occasions, they would street race other local muscle cars and she would get out and flag/ start the race. Anyway, the was taken off the road in the mid 70's..she said 1976 - 1977 and it has been waiting to terrorize the Mopars and Fords eversince:) Let me know what you think & if you want to see any area in particular. Here's some more pics, check out the interior...it's just very dirty. My next post will have pics of the interior after a good cleaning....
http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/kaniamark/album?.dir=/2569
Bowtie Muscle Jan 31st, 06, 05:34 PM The odometer shows 65K which I believe to be original!! Most of the interior is reusable and this car is VERY SOLID. I don't even think any of the floorboards will need replaced! What a gem...
Here's the interior "after" pics...http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/kaniamark/album?.dir=/9f41
drdave69 Jan 31st, 06, 05:39 PM Excellent find. Restore that car like it came from the factory (no spoilers, endura bumper, etc.). It deserves it.
36j1967 Jan 31st, 06, 05:40 PM I wish it could talk! I think you will be happy with how the interior cleans up. The switches, dials, and face plates look like they might be real nice under that dust. If the dash and steering wheel are not cracked that will be a bonus. I am guessing here but it looks like the car spent a few years in the elements before being garaged. I say that just by comparing the interior to the exterior. I have a 68 L78 that was factory ordered with an M22 and 4.56 axel ratio. I would be interested if you know the setup of your car yet? Nice find and keep us posted.
Bowtie Muscle Jan 31st, 06, 05:47 PM 36j1967 My last post has pics of the interior after cleaning began, check those out. I believe it had a M21 originally, unfortunately, it's gone. The rear is a 12 bolt posi w/ 373's. It too is correct.
Bowtie Muscle Jan 31st, 06, 05:57 PM Honestly guys I don't currently have the means to restore this car. Believe me If I did, I would. I love these cars (this one especially), that's why I took just about every penny I had set aside to buy it.. I bought it knowing I wouldn't be able to restore it but, as you can see, it's on it's way to a better life (it's no longer a trash can). I know what this car is and how truly awesome the intentions were when it was built. Realistically, I'm going to sell it to someone who can & will bring it back to it's former glory. I did pay alot for this car but it was worth it and hopefully whoever winds up buying it will appreciate it as much as I do.
36j1967 Jan 31st, 06, 06:24 PM I sent you a PM :)
bilodeaulynn Jan 31st, 06, 07:57 PM Any documentation to prove it was originally an L89?
Lynn
copter Jan 31st, 06, 08:19 PM You have a PM from me also.
Bowtie Muscle Feb 1st, 06, 04:12 AM Any documentation to prove it was originally an L89?

Unfortunately the build sheet was not above the gas tank. The partial vin on the block DOES match the vin on the car. I've heard there is a very slim chance the build sheet could be in the interior. If anyone knows the best places to look, please let me know; I'd be more than happy to search for it. I've had the back seat out, console removed but that's about as far as I've gone. I really don't have the time right now to address all of the e-mails I'm getting (I guess I didn't really think the "for sale" comment through). The car will be for sale very soon. I'll post it on this web site and try to answer as many questions as possible in the description. Thank you to everyone who has inquired about the car, It may take awhile, but I will get back to everyone who has taken the time to contact me. By the way Paul, I thought this may be a 1 of 1 Hugger Orange still surviving...I guess there is another one out there...Guess not, but what a picture of what this car will look like finished!!
z10rod Feb 1st, 06, 05:11 AM ck bench racing to see what i drug out last weekend!!!!
1969 RS/SS DROPTOP Feb 1st, 06, 05:39 AM Yes it is hugger orange with black deluxe interior, sent you a PM.
kleptopigdog Feb 1st, 06, 06:48 AM You know something like this just doesn't happen that often .I've kicked my self in the butt for getting rid of a couple of cars because i didn't have the means cash wise to finish them. You really need to take a step back and figure out if selling this is really what you want to do .That buddy is a piece of history in your hands.
think about all those stories I use to have one of those.......I could just kick my self in the ass for selling that...........I found one and sold it what a mistake .....anyway great find & good luck w/ whatever you decide!

There's another 69 Camaro in the same garage--did you buy that too? Is that one for sale?
buzzworth Feb 1st, 06, 10:17 AM Damn!!!!!!! life is strange. Here I am with the funds to restore a car and don't have the right car.
sean
good luck. that is an incredible car and will give someone a real thrill !
Bowtie Muscle Feb 1st, 06, 10:26 AM Good eye Brent. I was wondering when someone was going to notice that. Sorry, that one's gone too. BTW, beautiful Camaro.
Bowtie Muscle Feb 1st, 06, 03:22 PM Ok, first, I want to thank everybody who has e-mailed me about the car (all 150 of you!!!! just kidding). I apologize but I don't think I can keep up with all of you so I'm going to add more info abouth the car.... I will post alot of information about the car tonight; more history, good things about it and bad things (if they can be considered bad). I hope I will answer alot of the questions and help determine if this car is REALLY what you want....After tonight, I will do my best to contact everyone interested. Thanks Again.
BTW kleptopigdog, I hear you (and so does everyone e-mailing me; there probably screaming "be quiet") The fact is, I've already got my eye on a another 69' SS 396 car that is more in my "ability" to work on and fix-up. If I kept this car, it would wind up sitting in my garage just like it was. I said it before I love this car, enough to sell it so it can get the attention it deserves. Who knows, maybe I will get the other car, see you guys in Carlisle, and get smacked in the head for what I'm doing right now:)
Bowtie Muscle Feb 1st, 06, 03:32 PM Some good things you should know about the car:
According to the widow: He pulled the original L89 block soon after buying the car and switched it with a L78 (he did continue to use the heads). She said he didn't want to damage the original block (keep in mind this was the early 70's...smart man). I did get the L78 block when I bought the car. I did get: pistons, connecting rods, push rods, cam & lifters. I don't know if these were original to the car. I do know the cars were moved about 7 years ago and I suspect some of the original components may have been lost in that move. Unfortunately, As far as I can tell, the block, heads and the items mentioned above are really all that I have for the motor. No trans. The rear appears correct Feb 17, 373, Posi. Here's a pic... http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/kaniamark/album?.dir=/bb08
nikkisdad Feb 1st, 06, 04:26 PM O.K. Bowtie Muscle, I passed on my buddies L89 24+ years ago when he died. The widow wanted only me to buy the car, but I really had trouble with having the car around, and opted out at only 4,500 dollars. I have felt like sh** for all those years about my decision. I just bought the car last summer for the better part of 100,000.00 and am thrilled to have it! I was just very fortunate to have access to the funds my second chance. I know there are guys out there that want to buy it, and you will be offered alot. Just remember if it leaves you may never have a chance to have a car this historic. Good luck with your decision, and take your time, Mike.
Bowtie Muscle Feb 1st, 06, 04:45 PM This is the BIGGEST double-edged sword I've ever felt...
Bowtie Muscle Feb 1st, 06, 04:46 PM I'm going to continue to talk about the car as my evenings are short....
Bowtie Muscle Feb 1st, 06, 04:58 PM Something that may or may not matter to a potential buyer is that I bought this car with a Bill Of Sale only. She couldn't find the title. I did buy a 68 Charger awhile back without a title (it sat for about 7 years) and got one through Broadway Title Company. It took about 4 weeks but really wasn't difficult. The Camaro has sat for 30 years so this should not be any trouble at all. If this is a issue for alot of you let me know. Also, does anyone know where in the interior a build sheet could possibly be??? Any feed back is appreciated.
BTW Mike, I read all about your car 2 months ago. That is a beautiful original car and I think it's awesome you were able to buy it again. I really am o.k. w/ selling this car. I know it's hard to believe but I pretty much knew when I found/bought the car that I would be selling it. It's more than I wanted to take on. I know I will someday say "I actually had an L89 Camaro at one point and sold it" and then I'll jump! I can tell you this, I don't know how I can sell it as there are going to be alot of disappointed people. I'm hoping I won't upset alot of people on this forum....lots of interest.
Bowtie Muscle Feb 1st, 06, 05:10 PM Here's some pics of the underside as well as the owners manual, info about the headlight washers and green stamps I found under the seats....
http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/kaniamark/album?.dir=/22c4
Bowtie Muscle Feb 1st, 06, 05:20 PM Something I wanted to say about the title..I figured since this is only a 2 owner car and I was not going to keep it, if I titled it, it could detract from it's originality.
1969 RS/SS DROPTOP Feb 1st, 06, 05:26 PM IMO No.
1969 RS/SS DROPTOP Feb 1st, 06, 05:29 PM Sorry about that i sorta read that in a question kinda way, you know what they say about losing your sight.
Rainer Feb 1st, 06, 05:37 PM So what was the story with her husband? Deceased? Divorced? How great that she/they had the sense to store the car indoors. Just think how many of the "cars in barns" types of cars started out looking like this before someone left them outside in the elements to rot away
Bowtie Muscle Feb 1st, 06, 05:48 PM He is deceased. He must have talked about the rarity of this car to her as she kept reiterating that the car has aluminum heads and is quite rare.
67L78conv Feb 1st, 06, 05:53 PM I can't think of anytime I have drooled this much without a dentist visit. An unvelievable find, good luck with it.
z10kl Feb 1st, 06, 06:01 PM Tell us about the other car that's gone. Unless that is the one you have your eye on.
Chuck L Feb 1st, 06, 06:26 PM Bowtie,
I would get the title and register it in your name, because otherwise your name will never enter its bloodline and all you will have is another story about a guy haveing a very rare car. PUT YOUR NAME ON IT.....
Bowtie Muscle Feb 1st, 06, 06:33 PM LOL!!!!!!! You're Probably Right! Would that hurt the value? 2 owner 65k original miles....
nikkisdad Feb 1st, 06, 06:36 PM Bowtie, I just had to tell you my story. It seems you have a pretty good grasp on what you are going to do with the car, and I respect that. I just could not sit quietly, and the advice I offered was from what I went through. No matter what, you are the man of the hour with this fantastic find, and as always good luck with it, Mike. P,S, did you get into the L89pictures on page 5 of my L89 story under Chevythunder's photobucket site?
Bowtie Muscle Feb 1st, 06, 07:14 PM Mike, the pictures didn't come up at first but I was able to see some on a friends computer. Actually, when I first found this car I printed out your entire thread (still have it in a folder) to help me identify this car. With all the questions and answers, there was a ton of great info. So did we solve the mystery of the blue tail panel? :). I don't want to get into a big thing here but it was my understanding that all 396 cars got the black tail panel. But after your thread, I've seen several that were body color, who knows? Best of luck to w/ your incredible car and thanks for your comments.
Regards,
Mark
Chuck L Feb 1st, 06, 07:47 PM I really dont think that the amount of owners a car has affects the value of it, unless you were the original owner.
36j1967 Feb 1st, 06, 08:33 PM OK, so you have an L78 block too?!? Check the partial vin # on it...you might make another guy with a missing L78 block very happy :) I know of one that was lost in the St. Louis, MO. area.
copter Feb 1st, 06, 08:48 PM OK, enough is enough sell me the car and be done with it!!:D
lchb7 Feb 1st, 06, 08:57 PM what is the vac tank under the fender for? as you asked?
nikkisdad Feb 1st, 06, 09:10 PM Mark, I really never got to the bottom of the black tail pan for sure, but I can attest to the paint all being factory, this car has never been repainted. Possibly my friend ordered it this way, maybe being it was one of 311 made they just done it different, maybe being it was a LA car the paint guys were rolling a doobie at the time, I really could not know for sure. I would never paint it black to keep it in line with current specs, and if I can get the funds together I will bring it back to Carlise for the survivor judgeing, thanks to Steve Shauggs invitation. It is a long way from home, "Utah", but I would be thrilled to meet alot of the members here at the show. I only wish someone close by could do the certification for me. I think that the amount of paperwork, originallity, and history on my car made it worth the purchase price, but it will always be a sentimental car for me because of my friend John. When I was young I used to wax it while they got it ready for the drags. I was a little younger than the guys, but was always welcome to be part of the group. Got plenty of drag race experience with these guys for sure!
Bowtie Muscle Feb 2nd, 06, 04:14 AM lcbh7 Re: 1969 L89 Out of 29 year storage....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
what is the vac tank under the fender for? as you asked?
Good question, I was wondering the same thing.
36j1967 Feb 2nd, 06, 06:25 AM I do'nt see any vac tank?!? Am I missing something? Cheery bomb exhaust maybe?
Jeff H Feb 2nd, 06, 06:30 AM That's a great find. With how rare it is, I would take time to really think about selling it. You'll probably never be able to find another one in the future. Give it a little time and maybe you'll find a way to make it work out and get it restored. My car is now in it's 7th year of restoration. A top flight restoration is not cheap so cash flow was a definite issue. Take your time to make the final decision.
sandiegoz28 Feb 2nd, 06, 08:11 AM what is the vac tank under the fender for? as you asked?
It's a reserve tank for the rallysport headlight system, which operates on a vacuum.
Good luck with the car - great find and great potential! As Jeff says, think it through and plan carefully.
Here's a picture of what it looks like - partially tucked under the front drivers side fender:

Enoch Feb 14th, 06, 01:53 PM Hey Mark, whats the latest on the car??? Are you still selling it ??? I'm interested!!!
z10kl Feb 14th, 06, 08:48 PM He sold it
