View Full Version : 1967 327HP Motor??
Bowtie Muscle Jan 31st, 06, 09:36 AM Hey guys, this is probably a very easy question for ya.... In 1967, the 327 HP motor stood for high performance or was this the horsepower rating? If it stood for anything but horsepower, what was the rating? Thanks for your help, I'm still learning.
Regards,
Mark
1969 RS/SS DROPTOP Jan 31st, 06, 09:50 AM 327 cubic inches 275hp rating some were more some were less
Bowtie Muscle Jan 31st, 06, 09:51 AM Thanks, so the "HP" was NOT a horsepower rating?
36j1967 Jan 31st, 06, 09:54 AM All small block engines used the same block. The 327 was offered in two versions 327/210hp (base) and a four barrel carb option 327/275hp (different crank, heads etc). This second configuration was very similar to the entry level SS 350/295hp engine (no SS cars had 327 engines). Again same block different internals. Hope this helps?
Bowtie Muscle Jan 31st, 06, 09:58 AM I'll run the numbers once I look the car over carefully, but the owner is saying the car has the 327HP motor. Would this be considered the more powerful motor?
Thanks
36j1967 Jan 31st, 06, 10:13 AM Most likely it would be the 327/275hp motor. Check the suffix code on the block pad for MK or ML if its a manual, and MM or MN if its automatic. The 327/275hp with a four speed Saginaw transmission is considered a high performance package. It's not uncommon to see base 210hp 327 with added intake and quad carb. being based off as something its not. Theres more to it than that!

As far as I know, no motor was ever designated '327HP'.
67CruiseMasterCamaro Jan 31st, 06, 11:16 AM 36j1967, actually the 3892657 block was in 2 different variations. One was for the 302/327 configuration with thin webs for small crank journals, and the 350 version which had thicker webs and large journal crank. A 350 crank (1182 casting) can't be installed in a 302/327 block even if you machined the journals for the crank. As for the crank being different, in 1967 the crank was the same used on 210/275 hp versions. The intake and carbs were definately different, hence the horsepower difference. Also different were the distributors.

36j1967 Jan 31st, 06, 03:28 PM Hold on fella's, I was giving an easy to understand watered down explaination to a self proclaimed Newbie. In 67 the block casting numbers for all small blocks were the same 3892657, with limited exception. If we need to debate large journal from small journal and steel crank from cast we need to start another post on the subject so we dont confuse the new guy :)
67CruiseMasterCamaro Jan 31st, 06, 04:01 PM Well said 36j1967. Sorry to hijack the thread. But I just wanted to clarify what was said.
Bowtie Muscle Jan 31st, 06, 05:44 PM I will probably go look at the car this weekend. The guy says it's a #'s matching drivetrain. Any tips on where numbers (partial vin) for the block, & trans are located will be helpful. The should be easy to find as they are both out of the car:)
36j1967 Jan 31st, 06, 06:37 PM You wo'nt find a partial vin on a 67 327 engine or tranny. They didnt start that untill 68 for the 327's. The assembly code on the block is on the ledge under the passenger side head. The cast date will be on the rear passenger side of the block the casting number on the other side. You need to match that to the cowl tag build date to see if it lines up or not.
bilodeaulynn Jan 31st, 06, 07:34 PM I think he is referring to the engine assembly code designation, and yes there was an "HP" coded 327 in 1967, but not in the Camaro. An HP coded 327 would be a 350 horse engine in a Corvette with A/C and P/S. Sweet engine.
If the engine is in a Camaro, it is not numbers matching.
67 Camaro 327 possibilities are:
210 Horse MT w/o smog MA
with smog MB
210 horse A/T w/o smog ME
with smog MF
275 horse M/T w/o smog MK
with smog ML
275 horse M/T w/o smog MM
with smog MN
Hope this helps.
