I am looking at a 69 Ralley Sport that is black CC/BC and slick as a button he said he had to paint it 3 times can there be too much paint on a vehicle and if so what kind of problems would develop? Also would a true 69 RS w/SS hood that is complete on the outside but needs all interior done be worth $11,000

3 times or 3 coats? Why would you paint it 3 times? Maybe to hide some poorly laid filler? 11k for an SS/RS is OK I think, even without the interior...assuming the body isn't a 'Bondo Poster Child'.

too much paint:

cracks, like in an old museum painting

flaking, like sunburn peel

WAY too much paint:

rockers scrap the ground

rims get a "flat" spot

hood, roof, and deck lid have a concave shape

tires blow out

add three minutes to E.T.

car snags pedestrians off the sidewalk without scuffing tires on the curb

(all of the above also applies to too much bondo)

Bills right.... I'd ask him if he means 3 times, or 3 coats. They're two totally different things. If he had to paint it three times to get it to look as good as you say, I'd bet all that paint is hiding something.

If you're looking at the car, then bring a small magnet with you next time, and a bright flashlight. Use a piece of paper or real thin piece of cloth against the body (so as not to scratch the paint) and run the magnet along the rockers, bottoms of quarters, bottoms of doors, all over. See how well the magnet 'sticks' to the car. If it grabs real nice on an area that you know is sheetmetal, but barely holds on those areas, it's a "Bondo Rig" and the paint is hiding something.

Use the brightest flashlight you have and pull up the mats or covers in the trunk. Check all around. Get on your back and peek up along the quarter drop-offs, and above the gas tank as best you can. See if he'll pull the rear wheels so you can get inside the wheel wells and take a real good look at the backsides of the wheel opening lips and the frame, rockers, etc. Everywhere.

For that kinda money, he should be willing to do whatever it takes to sell the car, IF you're that interested in it to begin with. $11,000 isn't out of the question though.
Good luck!
