I am chemical stripping some of my sheet metal to prepare for painting. It may be months before we get to the paint shop. What should I coat the bare metal with for storage to protect from rust.

i personally would give it a coat or 2 of etching primer, if it might see some moisture i would epoxy prime it also, goodluck

I bought some Picklex 20 from the autobodystore.com (http://autobodystore.com/coatings.htm) and it seems to be working great...

I agree with the Picklex 20. So far, 3 months after stripping just trace rust. I did initially use the Metal ready power from Eastwood that you dilute in water, but trace rust came after 1 month and fingerprint acid from pushing the body around on the sled made it rust faster. Also, like the other post above says you can use Epoxy primer. The PPG Omni primer is really reasonably priced and you can do body work over it after sanding it with 80 grit.

Be cautious of just etching primer. The single stage etching primer from Eastwood will wick moisture through it and rust. The 2 stage 1791 PPG etching primer is probably better but expensive, however, I haven't let it set uncovered for more than a week to see how well it seals.

Ive had PPG dx1791 on the roof and several other parts of my chevelle for about 4 years and yet to show any rust coming through. But on that etch after 24hrs you MUST scuff sand recoat again with dx1791, then topcoat with primer surfacer. If the car is going to be anyhwhere but inside you should apply a coat of expoy over that etch to protect agaist moisture...Eric

Thanks, I am going to take the parts to my Body Shop and they will prep and prime as I get each piece ready. This way he will have confidence the surface is properly prepared
