Hello all

When replacing my rear springs I ran into a problem mounting my u bolts

I got them on but I was wondering if anyone has seen the bends that I located on my axel. I think the rear end came from a Firebird but I have not been able to locate any stampings.

Does anyone think that this is a chop job or is it correct?

thanks

It's easy to tell a Firebird rearend from a Chevy's without any stampings. A Pontiac rearend cover has scallops on each side of it where a chevy cover is completely round. Also Pontiac axles are bolt in, Chevy's use C-clips.

The tubes look bent to me. Strange, I've never seen that before.

That is a BOP rear end, not a Chevy. The welds on the spring perches look like they are broke and they look like they were added on by someone. I haven't seen a Firebird rear end with flat spots on the axle tubes.

With the mono leaf spring perches that looks like a 67 Firebird rearend. Only 67 used mono springs, all 68 and newer used multi. If i is a 67 Firebird rearend, there should me marks where just inside of the spring perched where the radius rod brackets have been cut off (factory traction bars).hey're not there and would be on both sides. Also a 67 Firebird rear end will have the 'ears' cast into the top of the pumpkin for upper control arms. Pontiac just used one rear end for botht he Firebird and GTO/Tempest/lemans in 67 and the only difference is in the weld on brackets on the tubes. It des look like there may have been coil spring mounts on the rearend that have been cut off. If that's the case then the rear would be out of an A body Buick, Olds, or Pontiac. The flat spots on the axle tubes will correspond with the rubber bumpers on the rear frame( in the original car) rails that keep the car from bottoming out.

What is BOP is it the same as POS (piece of ^&*)

Did you say the mounts look broke and are for mono leafs, since I have multi leafs I guess that’s an issue?

The only thing I like about this rear end is that it is a posi, I think I’m going to look for another rear end.

The only requirement that I’m looking for is around 3.73 or lower gears. It has 4.10 in it now, and since I travel on the highway and don’t really race, I don’t like the 4.10 gears.

I live in the Austin TX area. Anyone have any clue where to pick up another rear end, or what to ask for at a junk yard? I’m looking at something to bolt in without having to modify.

Thanks for all your replies

BOP is Buick Olds Pontiac. The spring perches don't look broke, just the welds. The 8.5 Nova 10 bolt is a direct bolt in. The other X body cars have the same one. Look for '71 and later. This rear end can be built pretty strong, and there are a lot of parts available for it. All 8.5 10 bolt gears will fit it, all the way up to the current 1/2 ton trucks. This rear end will have 28 spline axles, but it can be upgraded to 30 splines with a new Eaton posi and after market axles.
