I'm installing a new Mallory HEI distributor and new wiring harness. The old HEI had...BAT & TACH printed on the cap....The new HEI has BAT & GRD printed on the top....Also my old harness has a two pin connector that plugged into the BAT & TACH......and my new Harness only has a one pin connector that I assume is for the BAT.....So I'm a bit lost whether I actually need a ground wire or not...or if actually the label that says GRD is for the TACH

Thanks in advance!

Dan,

You might want to check out their web site...I was just there and found a bunch of instruction sheets and stuff that may give you an idea of how to connect it...

Yea...I was on that site but they simply say..."Connect wire harnesses to the distributor cap where each had been previously"

The "New Harness" is making it a bit more difficult for me...especially since none of the wires are labeled...

If I remember correctly you got the American auto wire harness...you may want to contact them and find out which goes where...I am going to be talking to them tomorrow too regarding my MSD setup with the diode that is required...I think that they should have provided that with the custom wiring harness. I also think that they should provide the wiring harness (especially custom built) with some type of diagram or labeled wires. A standard harness is pretty east to figure out, but when they are providing extras it would be nice to have it labled somehow.

Actually I went with an M&H wiring harness...So far all the connectors are perfect...It's just that they don't label any of the individual wires....I heard that the Painless harnesses come labeled....that would have been nice!

I guess I'll call Mallory on Monday and see what they say!

Every HEI distributor I have ever seen hooks up like the factory types. Last year I built a 350 and used a Mallory HEI and it hooked the same as usual. The plugs are made to only go in the intended slots on the drivers side of the cap.

- Brown, Red, Black wires and plug closest to the cap
- Bat plug to the rear
- Tach plug to the front

Good Luck :D

take the top cover off your dist cap and take a look! notice both outside terminals( front and rear tabs) connect to the coil? The one to the right is usually used for the ign+ and the one to the left is pulsed ground from the module or control box (coil -) also this is your tach connection! Now check the center connector goes to the laminated coil core- this you ground, yes it will work without it but without going into reactive impedance and inductance
lets stop at it works BETTER!
