Guys I did a search and could not find my answer but are 10 bolt and 12 bolt axle lengths the same and would that length be 29 9/16? Heres my problem. I have a 12 bolt posi out of a 1970 camaro which is 1 inch wider than a 69. After mocking the rear up with my new rims I am gonna hit my fender well so I thought about having 1/2 inch shortened from both sides of the axle so it will move my wheel back in and give me the right clearance. I have the original 10 bolt and thought I could use the axles from it so I wont have to buy new axles. Does anyone see any problem with what I am wanting to do? I also have a guy that has an axle alignment jig who will do it very reasonable for me. I thought about selling the second gen rear but then wouldnt know what to do about a rearend seeing how expensive some of the 12 bolts are going for.

If I am not mistaken, the 12 bolt uses a 30 spline axle, and the 10 bolt has a 28 spline axle so no, they will not interchange.

well i already bought 17x9.5 rims with 5.5 inch backspacing so i have to mod the axle. Heck if I could even find a 8.5 10 bolt locally I would do that. My car will never see the track and will only be driven on the street.

i would be willing to trade you the 70 12 bolt for the correct 67-69 12 bolt for you car no need to do mods

The 1st gen rears are about 2" narrower than the 2nd gen rears and the spring perches are on different centers.
this is from the info i found so far

The spring perches are also going to be in the wrong location. The '67-'69 spring perches are 42 1/2 inches center to center, and the '70-'81 spring perches are 45 1/4 inches center to center. Don't cut up another original 12 bolt. Do the trade and you will both be happier.
