View Full Version : Hurst Automatic Shifter in '67 with Console?

Is there a Hurst (or other brand) of automatic shifter that I can use in a 1967 with the factory console (without custom fabricating)? I'm looking for a DECENT auto shifter for my TH400 tranmission and would like to keep my console, realizing the plate around the shifter may not be re-usable. My thinking is that this route may be easier and/or achieve better results than rebuilding the "mushy" linkage that I am currently frustrated with.

Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it.

To brichead:

Thank you for the info. and the great photo. Can you answer a couple of questions for me?

1) which model number of the Hurst Quarter-Stick did you use? I'm confused by what Hurst means by the "forward" and "reverse pattern" models that are available.

2) did your shifter unit bolt to the top of the transmission to achieve the height relationship to the console shown in your photograph?

3) was the installation difficult? Are there any parts to buy besides the Hurst kit? You can probably tell by my questions I've never installed a shifter bfore.

Thanks for answering these. I really appreciate it.

I don't know the model number. But it's a standard "forward" pattern. Park at the top, 1st at the bottom.

No, the shifter mounted to the top of the tunnel. I had to modify the 4-speed hole a little to make it work. The console is was 1-2 inches farther back than stock location. With a little patience (I don't have any) and fabbing you could move the shifter forward to maintain the stock console location.

3) was the installation difficult? Are there any parts to buy besides the Hurst kit?
It was a very easy install. No extra parts. The shifter works with a cable (not linkage) so it is very easy to locate & adjust. Like I mentioned above, you will have to modify you trans. tunnel a little, and make a small hole for the cable to run through.
I have gone back to a stock shifter and can make you a deal on my QuarterStik. (brichead@yahoo.com) I love the way it shifts, but didn't care for the way it looked poking through the console.

here are the pics of my install, its almost the same shifter as what cfunk posted, but that one is the console quicksilver, mine is the universal
this is the part number for the shifter i used #80683

the shifter is bolted to the tunnel not the trans, and i cut a plate to bolt over the factory hole, then the cable for the shifter goes thru a hole i drilled in the floor

the only extra parts i had to buy were the plastic to fill in the hole in the console and i had some sheet metal to cover the hole in the floor

and you asked about a reverse shift pattern, if you are asking you dont have one, but the difference is the order of the gears at the shifter (the trans still works the same)
P-R-N-D-2-1 this is forward, the way your trans came from the factory
P-R-N-1-2-3 this is reverse

I appreciate the input and especially the photos from CFunK and 400Bird. I'm going to go with the B & M 80683. I'll post a response on how it worked after I'm finished with the installation.
