Ok, so I'm in the process of taking the body down to the metal and found what appears to be some really awful body reapir from another time. Although I will have alot of time in fixing someone elses mistake... I was wondering in the repair how long ago body shops used brass and gas welding to replace body panels? Whoever did this work went to the trouble of hammering in the rear upper quarter area so it could be filled with bondo! Somewhere in the 1/2" + area. Yikes! gonna take longer to get things ready for paint that I thought. At least I'm not finding alot of rust if that's any consolation

Well that's my venting

It would be nice to know on the welding piece though

Thanks,
Tom

I found the exact same thing on both quarters of my '69. And the panel between the rear window and trunk was also brazed on at the same time. I have no idea how long ago but I'm trying to find out.
Now I have to smooth the contours along the top of the quarters as close to original as I can. What a pain!

Brazing in repair panels was very popular in the 70's and early 80's before good, cheap MIG welders became available. They found out later that nothing reall sticks that well to brass!!

Back in 1981 I watched some butcher take the brand new GM 1/4 panels for my partners '69 and cut the sail panels off and braze them in! graemlins/clonk.gif graemlins/clonk.gif

Guy's I havent got into the sail panel area yet... But I'm thinking about pulling the area where the seam is, out and then trying to grind everything back smooth to reclaim the original contour. I have a stud welder/dent puller and a large box of nails. What are your thoughts about repairing this mistake in this fashion?

By the way this is on the wife's convertable

Input would be appreciated

Prostreet, sounds to me like you should go with full quarters..

Guy's.... I ground down the old gas welds and found that I can trim the tab back to where the original quarter was trimmed off and then bring the two sections together and butt weld them. I did this in a little area and it's comming together rather nice. Just though that I would keep everyone updated.

Thanks for the input
