View Full Version : 12 bolt rear end question
q2quest Feb 9th, 06, 07:27 PM I'm going to go the minitub route and was wondering if anyone knew how feasable it would be to use a 12 bolt out of a 72 Chevy pick-up. I understand I'll have to cut off all the coil spring stuff and get it completely bare and then re-weld the leaf spring perches, but I'd have to do that anyway with the leafspring relocator kit. I was also going to buy new axles and the wheel offset hasn't been determined yet. Does anyone see a problem with my logic? Those rear ends are pretty cheap. I'm assuming they are as strong as the factory Camaro 12 bolts.
Eric Kammerer Feb 9th, 06, 08:51 PM Will you be narrowing the tubes and axles too, or just going with lots and lots of backspacing? I think the truck rear is 62" wide vs. the Camaro 60".
q2quest Feb 9th, 06, 11:41 PM Well, I hadn't thought it that far ahead. It probably should be narrowed, but then that's more expense and I should probably look elsewhere. If you were me what would you do?
Ozz1967 Feb 10th, 06, 04:14 AM If you want new...strange or moser engineering. They'll custom make an axle for you, but that will run you about $2200.00 plus shipping. OR...find you a first gen 12-bolt rear end off an old Camaro. Shouldn't be that hard to find.
67ptcamaro Feb 10th, 06, 11:44 PM Good luck finding the Camaro 12 bolt for less money then the new Moser.
You should decide on your wheels before thinking about rear end. Get the wheels do your mini tub and put tire/wheel combo on the floor and measure very carefuly and order your new rear.
Or, Find the rear you want and get your wheels back spacing accordingly. but first route would be much easier to fit everthing right.
DOUG G Feb 11th, 06, 05:33 AM Truck 12 bolt have a smaller pinion than a car 12 bolt.
67-69 12 bolts are getting like hens teeth.(seen $1000 adds for housing only)
A wider rear will fit if you use more backspacing. (so no deep dishes)
Depending on use an 8.2" can live and if you're going to be racing an 8.5" can be built to take quite a bit.
IMO.
69X11 Feb 12th, 06, 01:02 AM If you want a slightly narrower rear end, keep your eyes open for a rear out of a 65-67 Nova. you'll have to move the spring perches, but they are a little narrower.

pdq67 Feb 14th, 06, 06:47 AM If you want to be different, try thinking about a MOPAR 8.75" pumpkin rearend????
There are Chevy car 12 bolts and 8.5"s, Ford 9"s and MOPAR 8.75"s.....
It's a very good rearend too that is oft overlooked...
AND I figure CHEAP enough!
You will have to redrill the axles and such, but you have to do that to a 9" anyway...

big gear head Feb 14th, 06, 01:59 PM A Camaro with mini tubs needs about a 56 inch rear end. The truck rear end will have to be narrowed, no way around it. You can build the truck rear end with c clip axles and keep the cost down. You can also use the 9.5 14 bolt truck rear end if you want something even stronger. These use 33 spline c clip axle, and there is a very good Eaton posi available for it.
jdogg23 Feb 14th, 06, 02:11 PM Ive got a question i just bought a 67 factory bb with a 12 bolt rear end. Its not posi track. Is that how they came in that year. whats it take to put in a close to factory posi in terms of cost
thanks
