Please look at the pics and let me know if I'm on to something. 69 4 spd. My odometer and speedo are not working so I pulled the cable from the back of the tranny. First thing I found is that there was no bracket holding it all together, just a boltwith no bracket. The cable and "silver bullet piece with o ring" cam right out w/ the yellow 3:73 gear hanging there from tranny. I unscrewed the cable from the "silver bullet piece w/ o ring in picture" and then took the yellow gear right out (pulled out easily from tranny). My question is am I on to something? How does the yellow gear attach to the cable. I know the cable is the male end and the gear the female? I am confused.

The bullet should be held in place with a little metal tab that fits in the slot on the side of the bullet. The tab is fastened to the trans case with the small bolt. The square male end of the cable fits in the square female end of the driven gear, and then the female threads on the end of the cable thread on to the male threads of the bullet. I believe there is supposed to be an o ring inside the bullet to seal the driven gear. You might also peek inside the trans to see if the drive gear is intact. (the gear in your pics is the "driven" gear.)

I got the bracket, although when I try and install the yellow gear into the tranny it seems like it is awful loose. I can't get a feeling like it engages. Does it automatically engage when you put the bullet in and bolt it down tight with the bracket. Is there a trick to getting the yellow gear in the tranny lined up?? Does it just go into place?

See if you can shine a light into the hole in the trans and have a look. It sounds like your drive gear may be chewd up, dislodged or missing. It's a plastic gear that clips on to the output shaft.

Put an electric drill on the end of the speedo cable and have someone watch the Speedometer in the car to see if the needle moves. Your cable might be broken.

Take a picture of your mainshaft looking thru this hole so we can see if your speedometer drive gear is still there. Your tail extension looks good on these two photos.
The round worn circle you see inside the speedo bullet hole is where the driven gear pushes against when you are in a forward motion with your car. When you drive in reverse, the driven gear will try to push away from this area and against the speedo bullet. The helix angle of the speedo gears causes this and they were designed to do this.
