: Distributor Conversion

I still have the orgional points distributor on my 1967 camaro. I know that Accel sells a points eliminator module that replaces the points. Replacing the coil is required as well. What would the difference be in doing this conversion and keeping the same distributor or just replacing with a HEI?

The difference in doing the conversion is better fuel economy, easier starting, lower emmisions (if you care), more power,, better drivability.. Heaps of advantages! You'll love it.

The HEI modules that fit in existing distributors are good. I use an MSD 85551 (mech adv model) that uses the original AC Delco cap so it looks completely OE. With it a Balster 3 Coil and a hidden 6AL.

The old twin point I had was just crap in comparison.

The HEI sowetimes causes clearance problems at the firewall on first gens. I used an infra-red trigger module similar to the one you described in the original distributor and used an Accel super coil. It has worked flawlessly for 12 years. If you're not worried about clearancing the firewall to make the HEI fit then go for it. They also perform quite well.

I recommend the Pertronix breakerless system. Steve forgot to mention you never have to adjust point dwell ever again!

I've got to admit after so many years of "modern" vehicles, that I miss whipping out the old dwell meter and flex-shaft allen screwdriver and tuning the dwell on a fresh set of points to a fine hair... I never had any problems with the old points-style distributors, though I won't pretend to argue they are better than electronic.

There's just something more honest and simple about analog mechanisms... Maybe because you can see it work? (I even kept my favorite clear distibutor cap from the seventies). As our world becomes increasingly overwhelmed with digital gadgetry, (we're surrounded by it and totally dependant upon it 24/7), I find myself appreciating things like wind-up alarm clocks, radios with knobs, and distributors with windows more and more.

PLUS, There is also the advantage that in the event of a nuclear electromagnetic pulse, your Camaro would be one of the few running vehicles left!

That being said, I have had very good luck with the old Mallory Unilite conversion kits in the past. Very simple to install and very reliable and you get to keep your stock distributor and advance mechanisms.

I attempted to install a Pertronix distributor in my 68 RS 327. Not nearly enough clearance to fit. (Not to mention the trouble with routing the vacuum hose for the power brakes) I think the pertronix conversion in a new NOS unit should do the trick.

Now I need to figure out what to do with the big distributor!
