View Full Version : 30-30 cam replacement
Gambitt Feb 11th, 06, 01:43 PM I bought a newly put together 302 from a guy a few years ago to put in my Z. It does not have the 30-30 cam, it has something even bigger. Any thoughts on this cam? I am pretty sure I am gonna take it out (it has never even been run yet) and replace it with the 30-30, but I wanted to get some opinions on it before I do this. Here is what it is:

Pull it and install the 30-30, otherwise, I would try the CC 294S before I would change it so that you will have a comparison to go by.
As for the great old 30-30 cam, it is about a 314/254, 114/110, .455" net lift cam. It belongs in the motor so will sound CORRECT in it!!
I honestly figure a 302 motor will like a Z-25, Z-27 or Z-30 Isky better b/c it is a little motor.
Z-25 = 278/244, 108/108, .462" net lift;
Z-27 = 282/247, 108/108, .489" net lift; and
Z-30 = 290/250, 108/108, .450" net lift!!
And I know the Z-30 is a real thumper in a 375hp/327 FI motor!!

Ps., whatever cam you decide to use, buy good valve springs like at least the Z-28, (-142), springs!!
Gambitt Feb 12th, 06, 09:50 AM Thanks for the reply. I have heard JohnZ say that the LT1 cam would be a good replacement for the 30-30 cam...that it would give a little more low end power...but would it sound the same? I definitely want the original sound.

SCHOON Feb 13th, 06, 03:02 PM You might not have enough vac to operate your powerdisc brakes with this cam.
Gambitt Feb 13th, 06, 03:05 PM Yeah, I am just gonna pull it and use the 30-30...it's a shame to just throw away a brand new cam though.

1FASTZ Feb 13th, 06, 04:12 PM you should post the brand new cam for sale...there's probably someone here fixing to buy one because it is a pretty popular cam
Gambitt Feb 13th, 06, 05:08 PM I would, but since it has been lubed up and put in the engine, I really wouldn't want to advertise it as new...even though it has never been spun. I doubt it would be worth much anyway, as they only sell for a little over a hundered new.

zdld17 Feb 13th, 06, 07:02 PM The 30-30 and late design Lt1 #178 are not the same cam. Early has more duration and late has less thus making it more stock lope than the early #346 cam . What you will find about the Comp cam that it has advanced cam timing built in,, probably 4*. You can't see it but can tell it in driveability. I would try what you got first.

I have the Crane blueprint 30-30. I know my 302 is not a BB, but I don't understand complaints about no low end torque on these engines. Mine drives just fine with the M20 and 3.73's. If I wanted tire shredding torque I would have built a 383 or BB.
travis Feb 14th, 06, 02:54 AM If that 294s has never been run, I'll cover shipping to have you send it to me, rather than just throwing it out. I've got that same cam in my 388 and I love it.
However...the 294s is shorter on the seat duration than the old -346 cam, but has a tighter lsa, so idle quality might be suprisingly similar (just guessing here...I've never heard the -346 cam running in anything). There was a guy that used to post on here that went by 3DUDE IIRC and he ran a 294s with his 327 and really liked it. He had a video posted on here at one point and his car sounded great.
