View Full Version : How far should I assemble to paint?

I just painted my firewall and the car is pretty far apart. The subframe is out, rear/suspension is out and the body is on my lift. I have 2 subframes, one is rebuilt/painted and the other is the original that came out of the car. Should I put the old one in there and fit the fenders up then paint the car. Then swap the frames back out after painting. Or should I put the pretty one in there now and just tape it all off?
Thanks for the help,
Frank

My 2 cents? I would go with the frame you want to use and fit EVERYTHING prior to paint, you do not want to use a spoon on fresh paint!

Paint it as it sits.If the car is mettallic still paint it as it sits but try to paint it all the same day. This is where you hop you did some good prep work on the undercarriage and firewall or else the tape is going to peel that black up when you tape out to paint the body.

I would only use the frame that you intend on using in the car. I would be afraid of slight differences in the frames mounting locations or a bent frame that may cause allignment of body panels to be off from one frame to the other. I would hate to see you set all your gaps and get everything painted to find out you will have to beat on your fresh paint when changing the frames.

Thanks a ton for the heads up guys. I'm going to go with the frame I intend on using and roll with it.

Thanks
